A high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of experience in nursery, farming or livestock operations.

College education from an accredited institution or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience, provided such training included three courses in biology, chemistry and/or agriculture.

Possession of a valid Driver License.

Occasional travel is required.

This position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36.003, Florida Career Service Rules and Regulations.

This position works varying 8-hour shifts.  Schedule rotates.

GENERAL STATEMENT: This position will have primary responsibilities assisting in field and laboratory projects in the Bureau of Methods Development and Biological Control, supporting other bureaus in the Division of Plant Industry, and maintaining the security at the Doyle Conner Building Complex. 

Assists with duties as assigned in the Biological Control Rearing Facility and Biocontrol Phase I and II.  These duties may include maintaining environmental and sanitary conditions, preparation of diet, collection and manipulation of various insect life stages and the collection of data. 

Assists in the routine maintenance of greenhouses including pest control, watering, monitoring of temperatures and equipment, and other assigned duties. Promptly reports to the Maintenance Department any equipment malfunction or breakdown. 

Participates in field experiment and production of host material used for rearing of biological control agents.  This includes assisting with pest scouting, harvesting and sanitation of host material before incorporation into the colony.  Assists in conducting research projects including collection, preparation and sorting of samples, collection and compilation of field data, identification of plant pests, operation of laboratory equipment and entry of bibliography, data and other information into the computer.  Research and purchases material for the use of different biological control projects.

Assists with the construction of new rearing cages for biological control agents and repairs or modifies existing ones.

Monitors entry into and security of the Doyle Conner complex as required.  This includes sign-in and sign-out of personnel and visitors, coordination of visiting group meetings, receiving telephone calls for messages and referrals outside normal business hours, and monitoring the security of the Doyle Conner complex grounds.  Responds to emergency situations related to shift changes and extended hours. Answers incoming calls in a courteous and professional manner, refer callers to appropriate bureau/individual, logs calls, and checks in visitors.  Assists with coordination of rotational schedule for the Security Office.

Punctuality is critical and required due to the nature of this position.

Prepares and maintains accurate written records of activities.  These reports shall include detailed daily reports, time sheets, fumigation certificates and worksheets, chemical treatment forms and other reports as required.  This also includes timely submission for processing of field purchase orders and state purchasing card report.

Performs support work for other areas of the Doyle Conner complex, as requested by the supervisor.


  • Knowledge of safety procedures required in handling chemicals such as fumigants.
  • Skill in operating fumigation equipment, stereo-microscope, and lab equipment.
  • Ability to assist in laboratory assignments, to compile records and prepare detailed reports, to make minor repairs to equipment and work independently with minimal supervision and to adapt to changing work assignments.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods in hot humid environments.
