The Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a full-time faculty position with an intended start date of July 01, 2018 to support the work of the English as a New Language (ENL) program. The Alliance for Catholic Education is housed in the Institute for Educational Initiatives (IEI) at the University of Notre Dame. The position includes significant teaching, delivery of professional development, research, and program development components.

English as a New Language Program:
The Alliance for Catholic Education's (ACE) English as a New Language (ENL) program is committed to helping Catholic schools ensure that culturally and linguistically diverse students thrive. ENL employs a threefold approach which invites schools, leaders, and teachers to develop a deep understanding of the process of second language acquisition, employ research-based instructional strategies, and cultivate culturally sustaining classrooms in the context of the unique realities of Catholic schooling. ENL's efforts are rooted in four main outreach efforts: formation of Hernandez Fellows through graduate level study, onsite and online professional development, resource creation and research (articles, podcasts, texts, webinars, publications, etc.), and two-way immersion school development. We are seeking a scholar who will embrace this mission with zeal and with the ability to navigate and advance these four outreach efforts.

ENL exists in the context of the larger Catholic School Advantage (CSA) initiative, the national movement committed to promoting the value and accessibility of a quality Catholic education among Church and school leaders, educators, and families. The work of the CSA is committed to embracing the universality of the Church by increasing Latino enrollment, educating culturally and linguistically diverse children through excellent academic formation, and empowering all Catholic school stakeholders through the celebration of faith, language, and culture. Responsibilities of this position reside in four specific domains:

Teaching (25%)
    1. Instruct a graduate-level course in the 18-credit hour ENL licensure preparation program (https://ace.nd.edu/enl/hernandez-fellows)
    2. Instruct a masters-level course in ACE Teaching Fellows program, namely an English learner related elective (https://ace.nd.edu/)
    3. Teach a course to the participants of the ACE teaching program in Santiago, Chile (ChACE) (https://ace.nd.edu/chace/)
    4. Co-teach an undergraduate course each academic year related to English learners and bilingual education for the University of Notre Dame Education, Schooling, and Society minor (https://ess.nd.edu/)

Professional Development (25%)
    1. Lead, plan, and deliver onsite professional development to (arch) dioceses and schools throughout the year (https://ace.nd.edu/enl/professional-development)
    2. Assist with the application process for grant funding related to these programs

Research (25%)
    1. Develop a research agenda around topics related to English learners in Catholic schools
    2. Contribute to the unit's writing projects and resource dissemination (articles, podcasts, webinars, etc.) (https://ace.nd.edu/enl/resources)

Program Formation (25%)
    1. Form a network of two-way immersion Catholic schools with Notre Dame's Institute for Latino Studies (http://latinostudies.nd.edu/)
    2. Conduct site visits and observations of ENL's two-way immersion school, Holy Cross School, in South Bend, IN (http://www.holycrosscrusaders.org/)
    3. Generate a research agenda around two-way immersion Catholic schools and their academic, ecclesial, and social impacts, as well as developing replication models

This is a 12-month permanent position with appointment to the University of Notre Dame's professional specialist track in the Institute for Educational Initiatives. This position offers a highly competitive salary, benefits, and support for professional development.

Competitive applicants will have relevant academic preparation and experience, including disciplinary background in English as a second/new language, English learners, language acquisition, first and second language literacy development, bilingual education, and cultural diversity in a K-12 setting. An advanced degree in education or a closely related field of study from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred, but consideration will also begiven to candidates who demonstrate a solid progress toward completion of an advanced degree by June 15, 2018. Preference will be given to terminal degrees.

Additionally, the candidate will demonstrate strong teaching abilities and a willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues. This position necessitates strong content knowledge as well as adept communication skills.
