General Profile

The Associate Director of Global Trade Compliance is responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership and vision for Illuminas Global Trade Compliance Program (GTCP). The Associate Director maintains and continuously improves the GTCP and effectively manages the GTC staff in support of current and long-term trade compliance needs. The Associate Director leads group projects with members and stakeholders from a variety of functions and areas. The Associate Director must have excellent organizational skills, exceptional subject matter expertise, a high degree of adaptability and the ability to anticipate and respond to changing priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with business & commercial leaders to identify and develop strategies to effectively and efficiently expand the business in international markets.
  • Drive strategic direction of trade compliance processes to ensure robust risk mitigation management consistent with requirements of all countries and regions in which the Company transacts business.
  • Lead the International compliance and licensing function globally, establishing export & import compliance processes to comply with domestic and foreign laws. 
  • Establish relationships with regulatory agencies, monitor regulatory changes and apply them to the companys international trade strategies.
  • Identify & evaluate global trade risks, internally and externally; develop mitigating strategies and communicate to the business.
  • Lead & collaborate with stakeholders to establish programs to appropriately classify products and define standard trade terms.
  • Develop and implement trade compliance training, ensuring its effectiveness.
  • Drive Customer Experience improvements around Supply Chain by closely collaborating with customers.
  • Build and develop a highly effective & engaged team, establish appropriate staffing levels.
  • Lead efforts to drive continuous improvement in Order to Delivery process driving high customer satisfaction & lowering operating costs
  • Ensure Global Trade SOPs are current, effective and individuals are trained
  • Ensure that the Global Trade organization is compliant with the Quality Management System, Good Manufacturing/Distribution Principles & ISO 13485.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge:  
    • Extensive knowledge/experience in international trade, Global Trade systems and best practices.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of ITAR, EAR & OFAC regulations
    • Comprehensive knowledge of Logistics, domestic and international, modes, practices and policies
    • Comprehensive knowledge of SAP GTS
    • Strong knowledge & experience of medical device regulations as applied to global trade
    • Strong knowledge & experience with Cold Chain controls
    • Strong knowledge & experience with CITES regulations
    • Strong knowledge of Lean Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement Principles
    • Strong knowledge of business systems, data management and Microsoft office
    • Strong knowledge of ISO 13485 and GMP/GDP systems, applications and policies
    • Strong Knowledge of Mircosoft Office Applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Word & Outlook)
    • Familiarity & understanding of SAP ERP, WMS and Processweaver
  • Skills:
    • Uses an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness to develop and/or apply highly advanced concepts, principles, standards, or techniques to solve challenging business problems
    • Ability to develop, review & negotiate broker contracts
    • Ability to lead & develop a diverse team in a fast paced environment
    • Ability to exercise sound judgement within established guidelines
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in written format in English

  • Education
    • Bachelors degree in Business, Supply Chain or Engineering; MBA preferred
    • Broker License preferred

  • Experience
    • 10-12 years of experience with Global Trade or related function required
    • Previous experience in Life Sciences organization with focus on research and diagnostics preferred

  • Other
    • Willing & able to travel to various Illumina and customer locations, domestically and internationally
    • Willing to work as necessary to achieve defined goals and objectives
