Primary Purpose/Job Function:The Associate Director position manages health, safety, and risk policies and procedures for the David L. Boren College of International Studies at the University of Oklahoma. This position is an integral part of the college, and campus at large. The individual coordinates the health and safety efforts for all aspects of the college - to include the academic unit, study abroad, international student services and international center operations. This person, in conjunction with the leadership team, will develop and manage policies and procedures as well as care for students experiencing crises abroad or in the US. The person hired for this position must have experience studying, living, or working abroad.

This position has recently changed, meaning that there are new opportunities for a knowledgeable, creative and industrious person to further build our basis in Risk, Health and Safety Management, but also to expand how we think about those topics.

Reporting: Deans Office


Responsibilities:
  • Create and manage policies related to international travel and in support of international students on campus to ensure consistency and the use of best practices.
  • Monitor natural, political, health, safety, and security conditions globally where OU operates, providing services and reports as needed.
  • Assess risk regularly for all international programs or travel opportunities, as well as domestic risks related to international students
  • Carry a 24/7 emergency phone (with a week break each month) and act as a designated first responder to all crisis related to study abroad or international students
  • Draft emergency response protocols as needed in regard to developing safety concerns
  • Create and present training to OU faculty, staff, and students on health and safety procedures related to study abroad
  • Develop an incident response protocol to record and review health and safety incidences abroad
  • Manage processes related to student health, safety, and insurance


Required Education:Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education/job related experience


  • 24+ months of experience in International Education, Higher Education, or Crisis Management

  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Able to maintain and navigate databases
  • Ability to perform basic math functions
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task and work well under pressure
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Research and analytical skills
  • Ability to assess data from a variety of sources
  • Ability to use good judgment in dealing with confidential matters
  • Ability to design, adapt, implement and evaluate procedures and systems, and to work to increase their efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Ability to make effective presentations on health, safety and security, and to communicate policies and procedures
  • Empathy to respond to the needs of various students, faculty, and staff
  • Strong interpersonal skills including diplomacy and cultural sensitivity
  • Skills in creating, writing and implementing policies, procedures, forms, instructions and handbooks with appropriate content and style



Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be eligible for a passport and available for international travel

Advertised Physical Requirements:
  • The person in this position will spend much of the day working on the computer and must be able to operate study abroad software on a regular basis
  • The person in this position will carry a 24/7 emergency phone and must be able to hear and respond to callers experiencing emergencies

Department Preferences:
  • Masters degree
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis management
