The Automation Engineer is a position with the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) department, focusedprimarily on designing and delivering sustainable automation solutions that optimize cost, capital investment, and system performance. Through creativity and applying a strong engineering aptitude, you will conceptualize, generate, and propose initial design concepts in a collaborative environment. In addition, you will deliver detailed control system designs, perform hands-on integration, and validate that the system delivered meets the specified performance in the manufacturing production environment. Youwill research and monitor manufacturing industry trends and implement best in class solutions for our global manufacturing facilities and other Emerson businesses.


  • Design and deliver sustainable automation/controls system solutions that optimize cost, capital investment, and system performance.
  • Interact with cross-functional departments to ensure alignment with overall business strategies.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles and processes to system solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments to plan and execute assigned deliverables to meet project schedules.
  • Perform design for automation process FMEAs (failure modes and effects analysis) to ensure the highest levels of system quality, performance, and reliability are delivered.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends by researching and developing the next generation of best-in-class automated manufacturing systems.
  • Coordinate standardization of programmable logic controller (PLC) and robot programs, and transferance between production lines.
  • Serve as a technical expert resource for manufacturing sites.
  • Own and make personal commitment and action to self-development.
  • Ensure that assigned manufacturing technologies and processes meet the safety requirements, in accordance with applicable industry standards.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering/Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or Associate's Degreewith equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in an engineering environment, applicable co-op or internship experience will be considered
  • Ability to meet schedule milestones and communicate status on multiple projects in a fast-paced engineering environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and be an agent for change
  • Ability to engage in multiple projects in a fast-paced engineering environment
  • Experience and working knowledge of PC applications and Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to travel between20% - 25% of the time
  • Legal Authorization to work in the United States - Sponsorship will not be provided for this role.
  • Two(2) years of experience in a manufacturing environment or working on custom machine design-build
  • Ability to recognize and solve complex problems in automation system design
  • Background in high-speed automation processes, including high-speed vision guidance
  • Experience in root cause analysis
  • Implementation experience with Poke-Yokes
  • Experience in controls, including PLC, HMI, VFD, andServo Drive programming
  • Experience in industrial robotics (6-Axis, SCARA, or delta style robots)
  • Strong understanding of general manufacturing equipment safety, electrical safety, and ergonomics

Work Schedule
We offer a work-life balance to our employees. General working hours for this position are: Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. While overall travel is between 20-30%, the nature of thisrole is such that during certain periods,travel will be heavierdepending on the project status, and can include weekend travel at times.

About our Location
The newly renovated Sidney campus has 1M square feet of manufacturing floor, with an additional 120k square feet of leading-edge lab facilities. This location is the headquarters for the air conditioning and cold chain businesses. Through our 30 years of scroll compressor expertise, our air conditioning related products help bring comfort and convenience in commercial, industrial, and residential spaces. The cold chain business helps ensure that food safely and efficiently travels from farm to fork. Approximately 1600 employees work in Sidney, who all support a multitude of business functions. With the blend of businesses and functions represented under this one roof, there are many opportunities for advancement within the Sidney location.
