And thanks to our flight controls systems engineers, our aviators are able to fly the open sky with an unwavering level of confidence! Our flight controls systems engineers conduct bench and flight tests to make sure everything we do complies with FAA rules and regulations. They spend countless hours developing basic system requirements for autopilot/flight director systems, including system performance, interfaces, architecture and algorithms. They also analyze and test existing systems to figure out where improvements can be made to ensure our aviators can stay in flight, safely. We are looking for a full-time Flight Controls System Engineer 1for our headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. In this role you will be responsible for conducting frequency response of servos and systems as well as participating in validation and verification testing in accordance with formal and informal test plans, including operation of system on bench to test functionality. Other essential functions include:



  • May analyze flight test data to troubleshoot autopilot related problems or performance issues


  • Develops and conducts test plans, procedures, and results for bench and flight test validation in support of FAA certification


  • Maintain and communicate requirements, allocate requirements among subsystems, and assure compatibility among subsystems so that the product ultimately meets its final objectives


  • Works collaboratively and professionally in a team environment with other Garmin associates to achieve goals


  • Accepts and acts on constructive criticism


  • Identifies and resolves defects of basic scope using proper engineering tools and techniques



Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering (BSEE, BSCE) from a four-year college or university, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Other requirements include:



  • Must demonstrate sound educational background in classical control system theory and ability to apply principles of root locus, Bode and Nicols to flight controls systems design


  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital control system theory, sampling theory and digital filtering


  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Simulink, and Control System toolbox


  • Demonstrates software development understanding of C programming language

Previous experience in flight control design, including autopilots. Flight directors, or stability augmentation systems in highly preferred!
