Job Description

This position is the face of John Hancock to state regulatory and legislative bodies, and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (in connection with the Federal Long Term Care insurance Program), for the LTCi legacy business. Additionally, the position supports state outreach for other facets of the US life insurance business, as required.

In this capacity, the candidate will develop and maintain relationships with key regulatory, industry, trade association, legislative, consumer, and other key stakeholders necessary to advance the interests of the company. In light of the high-profile nature of the position, which requires a sophisticated insurance regulatory professional capable considerable autonomy, the successful candidate will be an exceptional communicator, negotiator and creative thinker who demonstrates a commitment to advancing the interests of John Hancock across a wide variety of platforms.

The successful candidate will do this by:

  • leading a cross-functional internal team (including Head of US Legacy Business, actuaries, attorneys and operations) focused on the capturing as much of the multi-billion dollar future LTCi rate needs as possible, executing on plans they develop for each of the 50 states in the triannual LTC re-rate process
  • developing and implementing state outreach strategies to achieve successful rate and form filing outcomes in the 50 state Departments of Insurance
  • developing and driving LTC product filing, compliance and state relations policy;
  • demonstrated leadership on LTCi issues, with a deep knowledge of all relevant regulatory, legislative and legal challenges facing the broader market and John Hancock particularly
  • maintaining the highest standards for ethical behavior.

Job Requirements (Knowledge/Skills/Competencies):

  • JD and/or MBA strongly preferred.
  • Deep LTCi product, compliance and insurance background required.
  • 10+ years of senior level work, with a strong background in advanced insurance regulatory and/or legislative advocacy.
  • Senior insurance trade association experience highly desired.
  • Solid management experience required; in depth knowledge of product and compliance practices required.
  • Ability to contribute technical ability to the development and evolution of John Hancocks product management as a core competency
  • Market savvy " sound awareness of industry practices and distributor expectations
  • Strong analytical/problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Highly developed negotiation, influence skills and networking skills
  • Highly developed communication skills: written, verbal and presentation and good judgment.
  • Results orientation with an ability to think creatively
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of various aspects of the business operations and the associated financial dynamics
  • Broad understanding of John Hancock/Manulife organizational structure, businesses and operations. Ability to work effectively across all Corporate and executive levels within John Hancock and MFC.
  • Ability to influence/collaborate within the business unit to achieve successful outcomes
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to understand technical concepts in a business context, strong problem-solving skills and creativity in developing analyses and presentation of results
