Main Activities/Duties/Responsibilities
The successful candidate will perform a variety of routine and non-routine functions directed toward the formulation of architectural paints, their application, and properties of formulas and final coatings. These functions include: setting up formulation and application equipment, handling resins and formula components, performing analytical measurements, gathering data, analyzing trends within data, and recording detailed accounts of experimental results in an electronic laboratory notebook. Additional responsibilities include: maintaining a clean and safe laboratory, ordering laboratory supplies, cleaning equipment and disposing waste materials.

The candidate must be willing to work safely with hazardous materials on a daily basis, follow rigorous safety procedures, and wear personal protective equipment including the occasional use of a respirator. The candidate will work closely with a supervisory chemist who will provide instructions regarding experiments, formulas, and procedures, but the successful candidate will be responsible for prioritizing their daily tasks and maximizing productivity. Additionally, it is expected that the candidate will help plan daily experiments and take the lead on individually assigned projects, including organizing and analyzing experimental data. He/she will also be required to work independently and collaborate with chemists, engineers, technical assistants, and/or project leaders.

Experience and Education

Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related scientific or technical field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in architectural coatings and/or industrial chemistry laboratory work.

Functional and Technical Skills

Mechanical, math, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are required. Previous laboratory experience is preferred, with prior formulation experience a plus. Proficient written and verbal communication skills are preferred.
