Position Title: Data Center Technician - 4N

Position Summary

Under direct supervision, the Data Center Technician is responsible for providing first class customer support to Data Center and Network customers within the 24 x 7 x 365 Network Operations Center (NOC) that monitors, resolves, tests, and escalates network alarms, facility alarms and security issues. This position is responsible for answering all incoming Data Center support calls, opening NOC support e-mail request, tracking and following up on all customer issues, responding to NOC alarms, as well assist in completing new circuit turn-ups, customer installs, remote/smart hands and troubleshooting within the Philadelphia Data Center Network. The role will involve frequent coworker, client and vendor interaction while performing daily tasks. Excellent communication skills, people skills and follow up abilities are paramount as well as a keen understanding of the importance of maintaining accurate, reliable documentation. The right individual for this opportunity will need to be a thorough planner, must pay close attention to detail and be organized while executing tasks. He or she must be able to work well in cooperative efforts, but also be driven and take initiative on tasks which require autonomous independent work.

Essential Job Functions

  • Frequent facilities, infrastructure and environmental equipment inspections per shift.

  • Use Building Monitoring System (BMS) to monitor and troubleshoot data center facility environment and infrastructure.

  • Use Network Monitoring System (NMS) to monitor and troubleshoot data center network environment and infrastructure.

  • Provide support for operational issues and maintenance of data center and core infrastructure including network, power, HVAC, security, fire suppression, etc.

  • Provide off-hours and on-call support for remote hands requests, planned and emergency/critical data center events.

  • Assist with facility maintenance and housekeeping

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all products, processes, and systems

  • Process requests for customer physical access while maintaining security protocols within data center environments. This includes visitors and customer authorizations.

  • Inspect and accept daily courier / freight deliveries of customer equipment, log receipts, notify and stage items for clients.

  • Assist with terminating physical cross connects, test and troubleshoot for escalation or resolution

  • Coordinate and perform various remote / smart hands requests on clients networking and server equipment.

  • Coordinate and perform installation and configuration of client equipment, power and networking / server equipment including rack-and-stack, cable management, labeling and documentation.

  • Assist clients with software installation, administration, maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.

  • Perform other related tasks as required


  • Associates degree or equivalent technical training in network or telecom systems

Experience/Minimum Requirements

  • One (1)+ years of customer service and/or service dispatch experience

  • Telecommunication or network experience preferred

Other Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent sense of personal accountability

  • Excellent customer service skills with strong problem solving skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn specialized system tools

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment

  • Knowledge of servers and network equipment a plus

  • Detail oriented with strong written and verbal skills

  • Self-motivated with the ability to make critical decisions
    • Knowledge and experience working with various telecom circuits including fiber optic cables and copper connections.

  • Knowledge and experience working with various LAN, MAN & WAN circuits, environments, equipment and infrastructure.

  • Must be well organized and able to provide periodic progress reports to clients and management.

  • Ability to document client calls and work progress in various on line reporting and ticketing systems.

  • Must assume ownership of tasks and willingness to produce superior results promptly.

  • Must be reliable and dependable.

  • Strong self-motivation and ability to work independently with minimum direct supervision.

  • Ability to balance workload requirements and handle multiple tasks at one time.

  • Ability to work effectively in a flexible and changing environment.

  • Must pay close attention to detail.

  • Demonstrate initiative, self-reliance and be proactive.

  • Ability to maintain composure when workloads are demanding.

  • Demonstrate technical / mechanical knowledge and ability.

  • Ability to use basic hand tools, drills, wrenches, etc.

  • Ability to work on ladders, on hands and knees and work with materials overhead.

  • Must be willing and able to lift items up to 50 lbs. unassisted and as necessary.

Working Conditions: Works in a normal office setting with no exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Shift work including nights and weekends. On-call environment.
