Primary Job Functions:

Job Overview:

Expected Length of Internship:

  • 8 month internship during Summer and Fall semesters, starting May 2020 and ending December 2020.
  • As an internship company, we allow flexibility to enroll in classes while working as an intern, as long as it doesnt interfere with the essential functions of the position.

Experience:

  • Is there a specific skill set, class, or program knowledge that would be necessary for your intern? This is the minimum experience required for an intern to be considered.

    Course work in physics, mathematics, and statistics

  • What experience would be helpful but not necessary?

    Thin film characterization techniques

    Thin film manufacturing techniques (sputtering, roll coating, sol gel, etc.)

    Optical modeling of thin film stacks

    Solar cell device physics

    Solar cell manufacture or testing

    Solid-state physics

    SQL scripting or querying

    Programs such as JMP/Labview/Matlab/AutoCAD/ImageJ

Education:

  • Must be pursuing a degree in Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics.
  • Must currently be enrolled in a Bachelors, Masters or PhD program who is fulfilling a graduation requirement for their degree.
  • First Solar encourages all interns to register with their University.

Required Skills/Competencies:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated, independent worker who can flourish in individual or team-based environments
  • Experience with in-depth data analysis and creating attractive visual presentations
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions
  • Independent learner with a passion for gaining new skills and knowledge
  • Agile mentality, responds well to fast-paced work environment
  • Experience with fundamental technologies in a Microsoft environment: Windows OS, Office 365, etc.

Basic Internship Scope (Project):

  • Assist with the design and execution of experiments related to the optimization/improvement of our CdTe thin-film stack
  • Assist with the fabrication and characterization of experimental CdTe solar cells
  • Develop JMP scripts to automatically trend Key Process Inputs and Outputs (KPIs/KPOs) over time, utilizing learnings from this to help optimize our deposition equipment and inform future experiments
  • Continue development of a new optical metrology tool to measure thickness, n, and k of our thin film layers
    • Work with team to integrate metrology tool with existing deposition equipment for immediate in-line feedback
    • Develop thin-film optical model to derive thickness, n, and k for thin-film stacks by fitting raw transmission and reflection spectra
    • Qualify the new metrology tool by comparing measurements of thin-film optical properties against measurements taken with other calibrated metrology tools
  • Upon the completion of this internship, the intern is required to present their accomplishments and project summary to the leadership team.

  • Will sit, stand or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift.
  • Will climb stairs on an occasional basis.
  • Will lift up to 51 pounds on a seldom basis, according to work instruction.
  • Will push or pull up to 27 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
  • Required to use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry or feel objects on a frequent basis.
  • 20/40 vision in each eye, (with or without correction) and the ability to distinguish between red, yellow and green is required.
  • Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures.
  • May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
  • May stoop, kneel, or bend, on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to; steel toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective jacket or apron and arm guards).
  • All associates working on the production floor may be required to wear a respirator at any given time and thus, the ability to wear a respirator is a condition of employment and continued employment (requires little or no facial hair).
