What We Are Looking For

Director, Automation Equipment & Test (AET) Engineering within the Endoluminal team, reporting to the Senior Director of the Process Engineering organization. This is an exciting senior leadership opportunity to define and implement Intuitive's strategic vision for manufacturing and test equipment, factory automation, and factory intelligence across our manufacturing sites globally. In addition to being a proven people leader, success in this role will require strong business and operations acumen, product development and medical device expertise, as well as technical leadership within mechanical, software, and electrical (i.e., mechatronics) engineering disciplines. Critical to the success of this role is proactive partnership with other senior Product Engineering and Manufacturing staff to scale operations for product quality, cost, and delivery objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Endoluminal Automation Equipment & Test (AET) Engineering team to design, build, document, and validate electro-mechanical production equipment, automated test equipment, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Manage a team of Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineers including hiring, training, mentorship, academic/industry collaboration, and talent development. Additional functions may include Laser Services, Control Systems, Machine Vision, Engineering Technicians, Machinists, Technical Writers, and Data Analysts.
  • Participate with Product Design engineering to implement Design for Assembly (DFA), Design For Automated Assembly (DFAA), and Design For Manufacturability (DFM) within the product development lifecycle.
  • Effectively manage both internal and external equipment development projects, from concept definition and business case, through final qualification and facility transfers. Activities include performance specifications, factory acceptance testing, and IQ/OQ/PQ/PPQ within Intuitive's overall Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Support equipment engineering personnel and manufacturing sites globally, including United States (Sunnyvale and Atlanta) and Mexico.
  • Improve product quality and reliability using Six Sigma, Cpk, Gauge R&R, and similar quality tools. Effectively leverage manufacturing data and factory intelligence to improve product design and operational efficiency.

  • Proven ability to provide technical, strategic, and tactical leadership for staff and peers within global product development organization.
  • Ability to listen to the needs of the business and actively seek ways to leverage technology in order to better address Intuitive's opportunities or challenges.
  • Excellent communicator who can communicate and evangelize globally, both within Intuitive, as well as with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and customers.
  • Has a passion and experience for developing a team of highly technical professionals.
  • Is committed to driving the tactics of key operations, while always thinking one step ahead for the future of the business; ability to lead complex, high visibility/high impact projects concurrently.
  • Leveraging experience and expertise to recognize and resolve crucial issues exhibiting robust problem-solving skills and critical thinking.
  • Ability to bring together multiple stakeholders to buy into solutions in situations of strong opposition.
  • Excellent communication skills, written, spoken and public speaking.

Qualifications
Key Position Requirements
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in an engineering or scientific discipline. Advanced degrees (MS/PHD/MBA) are a plus.
  • Requires minimum 7+ years of progressive people and operations leadership experience within a regulated hardware development industry. Medical device experience is a plus.
  • Proven ability to inspire, attract and retain a team by leading with inclusion and diversity that will motivate people to produce their best work.
  • Experience with a wide range of low/medium volume manufacturing processes including understanding of key input variables for quality, cost, and capacity. Ability to envision and lay foundations for meeting high-volume requirements in future years.
  • Demonstrated success in unifying a product development and delivery strategy across a company/organization is needed.
  • Advanced computer experience using Windows, MS Office Suite, SAP (or other ERP system), and Agile (or other PLM system).
  • Multilingual in Spanish, German, or Mandarin Chinese and English is highly desired.
  • 20% travel (including international)
