Position Summary

Directs and manages the operation of the Erie Insurance Heritage Center (EIHC), a museum in a free-standing historic building operating independently of all other ERIE offices or buildings. Develops exhibits and displays in EIHC that enhance the knowledge and understanding of The ERIE's culture and heritage by The ERIE Family of Employees, Agents, Directors, Shareholders, and Policyholders as well as the general public, including remote EIHC displays such as ERIE's extensive license plate collection and vehicles on display. Develops and implements EIHC policies and procedures and provides professional assistance and guidance to EIHC docents. Directs and manages all aspects of custody of corporate archives, including: acquisition, processing, storage, preservation, finding aids, access, reference and outreach. Directs and manages the sustainability of the ERIE's archival material through digitization of photographs and documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manages overall operations of EIHC and archiving. Interviews, hires, trains and directs personnel. Prepares and conducts performance assessments, coordinates discipline and oversees Employee development as required.
Instills a customer-centric focus. Recruits, supervises, and provides professionalassistance and guidance to EIHC docents and volunteers.

Manages EIHC and archiving functions and spaces including helping develop andimplement the vision, mission and plans (strategic, business, project, actions) for theEIHC and ERIE's archives, recommending changes and improvements.

Oversees and acts as Curator for a large and valuable collection of ERIE records,materials, artifacts and special collections, such as the H.0. Hirt and Hirt/Hagen Family Collections, photographs, and other related materials. Participates in appraisal of records for permanent retention and evaluates preservation needs and related projects, such as imaging for paper and electronic records. Determines and documents acquisition,
transfer and deaccessions.

Develops policies and procedural forms in cooperation with the Law Division, forArchives and Curatorial process such as Accession, Deaccession, Incoming LoanAgreement, Deed of Gift, and condition reports for archived or exhibited items. (All final deaccession decisions with respect to the H.O. Hirt and Hirt/Hagen Family collectionsshall be made by Executive Management in consultation with the Chairman of the Board or an appropriate family member.)

Achieves EIHC's and archiving mission, goals and objectives as defined by Institute of Museum and Library Science (IMLS) and follows archives and museum standards andbest practices as per American Association of Museums (MM).

Manages, plans and conducts research of the archives collection and providesleadership in the development of education and outreach activities. Responds toresearch inquiries from authorized internal sources, including the Board of Directors, and approves and responds to requests from other appropriate external sources. Locatesand delivers requested information to meet business needs.

Reviews and approves requests for research by individuals and entities not directlyassociated with The ERi E and assists in arranging for access to archival material forthose approved.

Directs exhibition preparation, including researching exhibition objects, creating andmaintaining checklists and research files, writing label copy, organization, andinstallation. In addition, performs the research, development and interpretation ofexhibited items.

Develops and implements, in collaboration with Corporate Training and Developmentand Creative Services, a wide range of interpretive programs, exhibits and writtenmaterial. Provides historical context for collections. Maintains knowledge of copyrightguidelines of published/unpublished materials and photographic images that are used in exhibits and supporting material.

Participates in the preparation and administration of the assigned annual budget, submits budget recommendations, and monitors expenditures.

Maintains chronology of company milestones and historical events and changes andparticipates in company anniversary planning activities.

Conducts or oversees interviews in various formats with former and retiring executives, decision makers and others.

Participates in vital records identification and protection activities for disaster recovery to support business continuity.

Demonstrates quality museum methods and curatorial techniques, and maintainsprofessional and business ethics as outlined by MM and The ERi E's Code of Conduct.

Establishes partnerships and links with related archives, museums and historicalsocieties, including but not limited to: Erie County Historical Society (ECHS). Erie ArtMuseum, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) and the Buffalo Transportation and Pierce Arrow Museum.

Participates in continuing education programs, and attends and participates inprofessional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations withinprogram area.

Education Bachelor's degree in art, history, museum science, information management, or any social science field, required. Graduate degrees in related subjects and professional designations in insurance and museum subjects, preferred. Experience Seven years experience in archival, museum, public library, public history environment or maintaining college/business historical materials, required. Insurance experience in claims, marketing or underwriting and the resulting knowledge of the basics of the insurance business, preferred. Thorough knowledge of The ERIE's heritage and culture as well as working knowledge of The ERIE's organization policies and practices, preferred. Working knowledge of database software, word processing and spreadsheet software, required. Knowledge of presentation software, preferred.
