Director of Corporate Health and Safety will ensure corporate-wide development and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations and develop programs to bring safety to the forefront of the firm. This position will be responsible to develop and hone all internal policies, procedures and programs related to overall health and safety. This will require working across all H2M offices and disciplines to design programs that will lead the firm to drive safety as a core principle and the way we work. Site visits for auditing and advisory purposes will be in the areas such as active construction sites, water and wastewater treatment facilities, on and beside roadways, where H2M employees may be working in confined spaces, at high elevations such as on water towers, around heavy machinery and high-voltage equipment.

The purpose of this is to gain direct knowledge that will lead to ensuring every detail to providing a safe work environment is achieved. Our goal is to move the firm towards ISO 45001 certification.

Job Responsibilities:

The key, overall job responsibilities would include :

  • Working with specialists in various architecture and engineering disciplines to ensure development of appropriate standardized safe work procedures and drive their implementation.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining formal hazard assessment and control procedure systems to be applied corporately across all departments and locations. This will involve providing outreach and education sessions to system users, ensuring successful desktop and field auditing is taking place, and making improvements to the overall system to ensure good functioning, consideration of employee feedback and completing the PDCA cycle of continuous improvement in safety.
  • Responsible for ensuring health and safety regulatory compliance, take the steps necessary for achieving H&S regulatory compliance, including interpretation of health and safety regulations and applying them to real life situations, taking note of non-conformances and making recommendations, explaining the details of H&S regulations to employees and providing support as necessary to separate disciplines and office locations within the company to achieve compliance.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining the documentation and underlying systems necessary to pass external audits and achieve ISO 45001 certification for the corporation. This work will require good judgement, strong attention to detail, ability to project authority and providing clear, concise verbal explanation and direction to hundreds of employees.
  • Reviewing accident and incident documentation to ensure that required records are completed fully and accurately andensuring that appropriatecorrective actions are implemented.
  • Working with HR to incorporate processes to document and address staff issues into corrective actions as part of current company performance standards.
  • Identifying gaps or needs in H&S programs or employee performance and develop and deliver training to address the gap/need.
  • Responsible for successful preparation and dissemination of annual reports and other corporate H&S communications as needed.
  • Scheduling and coordinating a calendar of safety-related events and working with the Learning and Development manager to develop company-wide training initiatives.
  • Managing safety databases including data input, running searches, creating reports and providing feedback to users to ensure accurate and smooth running.
  • Handling H&S-related employee questions.
  • Conducting safety meetings and training others specific to each discipline.
  • Interacting with senior leadership, all other employees to ensure a consistent messaging of regulatory and corporate safety requirements.
  • Communicating and reinforcing the Company vision, values and goals regarding health and safety.

Education and Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of experience working in a senior level safety leadership role.
  • Occupational safety/health degree or equivalent combination of training, related experience and industry-standard certifications such as CSP or CIH.
  • A thorough knowledge of health and safety regulations and standards especially related to fall protection, the use of safety devices, hazard communications, construction safety and confined spaces standards.
  • Good working knowledge of ISO standards and health and safety management systems is highly desired.
  • Confident in knowledge and experience sufficient to exert authority when needed.
  • Ability to take initiative and act when needed.
  • Strong engineering, science architecture or construction field related background desired.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures.
  • E xcellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to train and educate others.
  • Strong computer skills (including MS Office software but experience with GIS and databases is also a plus).
  • Must be willing to travel to specific job sites and across offices.
