Ascend Learning is hiring now for a Director of HR Talent Acquisition and Compliance to work at our Leawood, Kansas office location. This position reports to the CHRO of Ascend Learning and will provide talent acquisition, employment law and compliance expertise to Ascend Learning. The position will also responsible for providing generalist employee relations support to employees in the Leawood office.


The Director will have experience leading a successful talent acquisition department. The Director will be highly adept at identifying gaps and/or risk exposures in the organization while creating and implementing practices designed to mitigate overall risk for nurturing a safe environment. This Director will partner with Ascend leadership to continue to drive a culture of compliance, diversity, inclusion, transparency, and communication.


Talent Acquisition Responsibilities:


  • Develop and retain a high quality, purpose driven talent acquisition team focused on hiring top talent in a high volume and complex environment.

  • Continue to build Ascends employer brand nationally. Partner with Ascends executive leaders to ensure that all talent acquisition programs are progressive, creative, sustainable and have a positive impact on the short- and long-term performance of the organization.

  • Build a data-driven recruiting organization by developing recruiting metrics and analytics that provide insights, drive decision making and measure team productivity and program ROI.

  • Prepare quarterly reports for Ascends executive team and Blackstones Board of Directors.

  • Develop and execute best-in-class practices for end to end candidate experience inclusive of sourcing, screening, interviewing, selection and onboarding.

  • Evaluate, select, implement and manage tools, systems and vendors in support of talent acquisition.

  • Leverage artificial intelligence and emerging sourcing strategies to increase the speed and efficiency of finding, attracting and hiring top talent.

  • Drive diversity outreach through local and national channels to ensure diverse candidate pools and compliance with OFCCP.

  • Assist in the recruitment of executive level positions.

Compliance Responsibilities:


  • Ensure company compliance with FMLA, FLSA, ADA and other employment laws through partnership with legal team and the HR team.

  • Identify and develop appropriate and contemporary policies for Ascend Learning; Maintain current and compliant Employee Handbook with regular and appropriate updates.

  • Identify and deploy appropriate compliance training for employees regarding employment law topics such as anti-discrimination.

  • Ensure compliance with OFCCP requirements through development and administration of Affirmative Action Plans.

  • Be the go-to resource regarding Employee Relations, ensuring the cultivation of a high performing and contemporary culture. Provide employee relations support for Business Units as needed.

  • Responsible for ensuring current processes and tools related to workforce reduction and outplacement services.

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred

  • 10+ years of substantive Human Resources generalist and/or compliance experience

  • Experience leading teams and taking responsibility for the coaching and career development of HR professionals

  • Operational knowledge of employment laws and their application to HR policy (FMLA, FLSA, ADA and other employment laws)

  • Compliance experience (OFCCP, affirmative action and other compliance plans)

  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial environment requiring multi-tasking, running fast, and being creative on initiatives

  • Ability to move smoothly from strategic to tactical work when/as required to achieve results

  • Collaborative team player with ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization

  • Strong team-oriented leadership skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, communication and negotiation skills

  • Proven ability to translate employment law into guidance for a low policy company
