Job Description

Plan, organize and perform a broad range of research and/or development activity building a high level of advanced, specialized knowledge to create differentiating technology and processes while using professional judgment with minimal supervision.


1. Plan, organize and perform the necessary trials and experiments (bench-top, pilot plant, and factory scale) as required to deliver the process and product development projects that meet the required objectives and are delivered in a timely manner
2. Participate and contribute as a member of a cross-functional team. Actively drive product and process conceptualization, development and scale-up. Interface on a project implementation team by assisting with hand-off from development to start-up
3. Creating and providing technical training as required to operating company personnel.
4. Function as a project team leader as assigned. Required activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing effective project leadership for the projects assigned
  • Fulfilling all requirements of the StageGate/Product Development Process and Nestec regarding "absolute" deliverables for each phase
  • Complete all required documentation and project reporting in a timely manner culminating in the Preliminary Manufacturing Dossier
  • Adherence to Company policy on protection of patent rights and intellectual property
  • Ensuring all appropriate documents and project records are filed in the Central Project Files, whether paper or electronic
    5. Effectively communicate results through oral presentations and timely, written technical documentation and reports
    6. Conduct all activity in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and all required Company policies and procedures
    7. Travel as necessary
    8. Practice safety in the work area


  • Keep current in scientific discipline
  • Continue development of project leadership skills
  • Further develop R&D expertise and competence in the manufacture of pet food (dry, wet, treats) including the monitoring and evaluation of new technologies
  • Propose and execute projects utilizing technical innovations/renovations that may be applicable to Nestl Purina's business strategy
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with vendors and counterparts at other Nestl operations
  • Provide a resource to the Business that can be used to coordinate the building of new or the renovation of existing pet food facilities
  • Provide an additional and credible source of Technical Support to the Markets
  • Additional duties as assigned


  • Project leadership as required for assigned projects
  • Mentoring to be provided by technology champions as needed for development.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Knowledge):

  • B.S. in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum three years of industry experience
  • Skilled in process design with mechanical proficiency
  • Good sense of business/technical interrelationships
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to manage multiple assignments/priorities
  • Good organizational skills
  • Pro-active/Self-Starter
  • Advanced computer literacy


  • Manufacturing experience within a production and/or maintenance role
  • Food processing experience
  • Experience in using statistical tools to drive process/mechanical design and optimization including, but not limited to:
  • Process Capability
  • Design of Experiments
  • Regression Modeling
  • Manufacturing Automation Data, Data Systems and Cloud Services knowledge
  • Programming competencies - Python, C, VBA
