Position Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Insurance Officer will lead the sales efforts for the region through individual sales and joint sales calls with Financial Officers. Serve as the primary agent for the larger, complex and/or full-time customer segment (generally greater than 750 acres) and indirect support of all customers for region. Incumbents are responsible for the sales, servicing, and renewal of these customers and will have a defined portfolio to service and increase the net acre growth of that portfolio. Incumbents are accountable for aggressive new sales growth and retention of the portfolio. Responsible for tracking, monitoring, and managing the workflow for assigned accounts between the marketplace and AIPs to ensure policy requirements and provisions are met. Enter insurance data in multiple processing software systems. Provide consistent high quality service that is timely, thorough, and responsive to meet and exceed customer expectations. Collaborate with Regional teams to reach sales goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

Sales

  • Serve as primary agent for the servicing of crop insurance policies >750 acres which includes gathering acreage reports and production histories. In addition, provide servicing to Hail Policies and Supplemental Insurance Products. Incumbent will have aggressive sales production goals established in conjunction with assigned Region and the Vice President of Related Services for assigned marketing areas. Responsible for sales production of Multi-Peril (MP), Crop Hail and Supplemental insurance products to customer and non-customer prospects.
  • Develop personal marketing plan and update annually around customer needs and risk tolerance. Look for all opportunities to cross sell all products and services to customers. Assist region with marketing plan to achieve region business and product depth goals.
  • Represent the Associations at industry events and other ag related events in the region. Serve as subject matter expert and make sales presentations at insurance sales seminars as needed. Provide product and sales expertise to region staff, prospects and customers. Responsible for providing referrals to other members of the Regional and Associations’ sales teams.
  • Through individual and joint sales calls, call on prospects to sell insurance policies. Develop proposals for one-on-one sales calls with customers or prospects, utilizing financial information gathered independently and from interaction with Financial Officers, Retail Commercial Lenders and Agribusiness Capital Officers in preparation of prospect sales calls.
  • Utilize the Associations’ sales tools, techniques and technology (i.e. Relationship, AgentPro, etc.) to effectively complete, track and document sales and customer activities.
  • Assist with organizing and coordinating insurance programs within assigned marketing areas.

Service and Processing

  • Process insurance forms from multiple insurance vendors for MP, Crop Hail and Supplemental products including analyzing and entering applications online. Leverage customer’s precision farming data to gather acreage reporting and production reporting information. Enter acreage reports utilizing insurance company software according to underwriting requirements and current processes and procedures
  • Verify correct application of underwriting and actuarial calculations by insurance company software.
  • Serve as point of contact for policy changes and enter information online with AIP system
  • Collect acreage information and process directly online with AIP system.
  • Report, track and review claims for accuracy within assigned portfolio
  • Assist customers with payment-related questions/concerns
  • Responsible for managing the workflow system in AgentPro for assigned accounts to ensure all documents are processed and reported timely.

Insurance Vendors

  • Develop and maintain a working relationship with insurance vendor representatives to improve sales and service to regional offices and customers. Make business placement decisions based upon AIP products and offerings.
  • Verify electronic insurance documents reflect current information and through use of insurance website reports and other resources, ensure complete and accurate reporting to meet deadlines.
  • Coordinate with Insurance Support Specialists and insurance company personnel regarding application of complex insurance rules for specific customer insurance policy situations.

Other

  • Provide sales support to Financial Officers and sales and servicing support to other Insurance Officers in the region.
  • Utilize multiple insurance company and government websites to obtain general information and to monitor progress regarding specific policies. Participate in collaborative decision-making as well as make independent decision regarding implementation of insurance rules and development of internal processes.
  • Assist with identifying updates and request changes to Insurance SharePoint processes, forms and resources.
  • Assist the VP Related Services with onboarding new Insurance Team members in Region and serve as a resource for training for other Outside Sales Officers. Assist in providing training support for regional offices related to insurance programs.

Additional functions of the position may include: 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Level 20: Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, finance, or business or a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, and one to three years’ experience as a licensed crop insurance agent or insurance company representative with sales responsibilities. Four to six years in a closely related ag field with sales and service related ag experience will be considered.

Level 22: Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, finance, or business or a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, and a minimum of three years experience as licensed crop insurance agent or insurance company representative or six to eight years in a closely related ag field. A current valid insurance license in crop insurance is preferred.

Level 23: Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, finance, or business or a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of four to six years’ experience as licensed crop insurance agent or insurance company representative or eight to ten years in a closely related ag field. A current valid insurance license in crop insurance is preferred. Incumbents service large complex customers independently and accurately with AIP systems

Level 24: Ideal candidate will have Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, finance, or business or a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree; a minimum of 10+ years’ experience as a licensed crop insurance agent or insurance company representative and experience in servicing a large complex book of business and a proven record of growing a book of business. They will be servicing the large complex customers independently and accurately with AIP systems.  A current valid license in crop insurance is required. Incumbents will demonstrate leadership within the retail office to include, but is not limited to: coaching/mentoring other Insurance Officers championing change, providing informal team leadership to the team, etc. Maybe viewed as an informal leader within the team.

Duties for all levels require:

  • Excellent human relations skills, oral communication skills and written communication skills.
  • In depth knowledge of crop, hail, pasture rangeland and forage, whole farm and livestock insurance.
  • General knowledge of accounting procedures.
  • Must be a self-starter and work with little supervision.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to initiate, organize and prioritize work.
  • Knowledge of Association insurance policies, procedures, standards and guidelines required.
  • Ability to use Insurance Company websites, Government websites, Insurance Company quoting and processing software in addition to internal software such as SharePoint, AgentPro, and digital tools.

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential materials.
  • Proficient in Windows environment using Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Internet Explorer.

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

Associations’ sales force in assigned region, Insurance Officer – Inside Sales, Insurance Support Specialists and AIP Specialists, insurance company representatives, agents, and claims processors, Associations’ customers and potential customers.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and effectively demonstrate team building attitude and skills.
  • Ability to initiate, organize and prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel up to 70% with up to 20% overnight travel. Overnight travel up to 25 - 30% for Wyoming Incumbents.
  • Ability to operate a computer and related peripheral equipment, telephone, laser printer, copier, fax machine and calculator proficiently, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use and understand computer software related to carrying out essential responsibilities of this position.
  • Ability to maintain a filing system by sorting, indexing and collating information.
  • Ability to move from one location to another within the general office to utilize support services, use copiers and printers, access storage areas, file materials, and communicate one-on-one with staff and visitors.
  • Ability to move about the office with occasional lifting, reaching and bending.
