Our Product Specialists bring ideas to life. As part of the Technical Services group, they create the flavors, shapes and textures often innovated in marketing and so enjoyed by pets. In this role, you'll handle various intermediate-term products, engineering processes and packaging solutions for the business, as well as provide technical support to manufacturing operations. You'll leverage your sharp science background and food formulation experience to be able to effectively qualify new raw materials and suppliers. You will manage product formulas using the Nestle PURINA formulations system with appropriate ingredient, nutritional, regulatory and analytical requirements. You'll identify and lead performance, waste reduction and quality improvement projects to help us remain a leader on the shelf. Manage development, scale up and implementation of new and existing technologies to improve the performance of existing products and develop new products.

Manage product formulas using the NPPC formulation system with the appropriate ingredient, nutritional, regulatory, and analytical requirements. Also includes issuing to manufacturing plant, and maintaining as needed.

Coordinates qualification of new raw materials and/or suppliers and act as ingredient lead for all assigned ingredients/raw materials which includes understanding raw material and manufacturing process and impact on NPPC finished products.

Act as technical resource for Marketing to develop a robust pipeline of product development opportunities, which includes developing technical project plans and timelines for all assigned projects

Provides technical expertise within "discipline" to PTC, Legal, Regulatory, Consumer Marketing, Purchasing, Q.A., CDG, HR, Plants, US Management, and other groups as it relates to business unit objectives.

Identify and approve product preservation /sterility CCPs and system qualification to include preparing and approving new operating procedures for factories, co-manufacturing and PTC operations.

Evaluate product preservation deviations of existing treat or dry operations in compliance with regulatory and Nestle requirements.

Assist Wet Thermal Process Authority in conducting thermal process activities in wet factories.

Effectively communicate results of all thermal process activities through oral presentations, information management (ex. team room) and written reports.

Collaboratively and proactively keeps management and key team project members apprised of issues, risks, timing, and contingencies relevant to technical and business success.

Proactively monitors and provides product maintenance for assigned product responsibilities requiring standardized scientific procedures.

Uses standard guidelines and capability studies to develop products in conjunction with factory systems, Quality Assurance and Marketing to link product performance and specifications.

Works closely with the factory and quality to establish new product, ingredient and process specifications.

Understands and effectively uses NPPC systems and tools required for scheduling activity and tests, collecting and analyzing data, and completing and disseminating accurate reports.

Explores innovative application of pet food product/process possibilities based on current state of art in the area of food technology.

Initiates and implements cost reduction ideas for assigned product lines and factories.

Candidate MUST be willing to travel 60-70% of the time with minimal weekend travel.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

BS in food science, meat science, animal science, microbiology and/or applied engineering AND 4+ years of food product development, formulation and scale up experience.


MS/PHD in food science, meat science, animal science, microbiology and/or applied engineering AND 2+ years of food product development, formulation and scale up experience.

Asset (Skills):

1+ years in a factory or industrial environment.

1+ years working with thermal processing and/or validation techniques
