We are currently seeking candidates for a Lead Systems Engineer position in our Dublin, Ohio headquarters.

The Application Support Group is a dynamic team responsible for providing second level 24 x 7 global application support and ensuring service delivery of the OCLC services in compliance with established service level agreements between OCLC and our membership. We work collaboratively with, and are the integration point for, the application development groups, infrastructure engineering groups as well as the Operations Services group. We work to ensure that our systems are delivering the functions our members need, with the availability that our members demand.

The team provides support in 3 major areas:

  • 2nd Level Operational Support the team is the 1st escalation point from Operations when there is an issue with the applications that run our systems
  • Maintenance activities the team is also responsible to ensuring applications and management systems are set up and working correctly, and appropriate monitoring and alerting is established and maintained in production.
  • Application Development Integration The team provides the integration point from operations and infrastructure engineering into the application development groups at OCLC.The team works collaboratively with the development organizations to maintain a base knowledge of the applications and in the evaluation of new function and architectures.They also work with application development groups on improvement activities, such as the reviewing the logs and performance statistics, the identification of anomalies, and the resolution of issues through improvements in the systems.


  • This position is required to take initiative on software development projects, large system infrastructure changes, and day to day operational activities to help ensure that the interests of the Operations team are protected.This includes attending meetings, researching project documentation, communicating with non-Operations staff, and supplementing projects with coordination, install planning and documentation, testing, and production support.
  • This position is also responsible for creating and maintaining tools used to automate the operation and monitoring of OCLC applications.
  • Provides second level application support to Operations and works directly with developers, DBAs, infrastructure and network teams in incident/problem remediation, both in production and non-production environments.
  • Respond to developer questions about configuration in the production environment.
  • Engage with developers to drive solutions that are operationally sound.Provide input on development projects that affect OCLC Operations as part of the infrastructure architecture team.
  • Write and maintain scripts and tools to automate and streamline day to day operations.
  • Participate in project work by attending daily/weekly status meetings as the Operations representative.
  • Participates in the analysis and implementation of 3rd party solutions for OCLC applications with the ability to understand the impact and analyze the risk
  • Participates in major architectural reviews and plans
  • Support technical and documentation initiatives as required


Technical Skills:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Math, or an Engineering discipline.
  • 3 or more years of experience in IT operations, application support, UNIX administration, or software development.
  • Strong Unix/Linux knowledge.Certifications desirable, but not required.
  • Knowledge of Python, Perl or other scripting languages.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong team focus and willingness to speak up on behalf of the IT organization
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with different groups of people within the IT organization as well as software developers and product managers.
  • Experience communicating with geographically diverse software development teams and understanding cultural perspectives and how they affect the software development process.
  • Must be able to understand and follow current procedures while having a mindset of improving inefficient processes.

Nice to Have Skills:

  • Knowledge of ITIL Incident, Change, and Problem process management highly desired.
  • Experience with Java
  • Understanding of Agile software development principles.
  • Knowledge of Apache HTTP and Apache Tomcat web servers.
