Maintenance Technician


The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair in support of the facility and production equipment. In this role, the technician will work with a variety of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems and controls. Superior logical-thinking and troubleshooting skills are critical. This position is critical to the safe and efficient operation of the facility.

General duties include, but are not limited to trouble-shooting, repairing and maintaining machinery, electrical/mechanical equipment and computerized systems, such as separators, clarifiers, pasteurizers, vats, tanks, silos, churns, packaging machines, case packers, bag fillers, palletizers, evaporators, spray dryers, high pressure pumps, conveyors, motors and all other associated components in accordance with the CMMS (Computer Managed Maintenance System) methods, diagrams, blueprints, operating manuals, or manufacturing specifications. This position is a member of the emergency response team.

Minimal General Requirements:

  • Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent

  • Must demonstrate the safe and appropriate methods of operating and maintaining anhydrous ammonia refrigeration and high pressure steam generation systems
  • Must possess a working knowledge of basic machines and tools including their designs, uses, benefits, repair and maintenance
  • Must demonstrate effective troubleshooting skills in diagnosing electrical power, electrical/computerized controls and/or mechanical equipment/systems problems
  • Must demonstrate working knowledge of AC & DC power and control voltages, PLC VFD Drives and process instrumentation
  • Must possess basic computer hardware and software skills

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently required to stand and walk; use hands and fingers, handle and/or feel objects, tools and/or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, often in cramped positions; talk, hear, feel, and/or smell.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50lbs
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • As a member of the emergency response team, individual must be SCBA certified

Mental Demands:

This position frequently requires mental demands.

  • The ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex diagrams, operating manuals or manufactures specifications.
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks and multiple deadlines and work effectively under pressure is critical to this positon.

Environmental Demands:

While performing job duties of this job, the employee is exposed to

  • Outside weather conditions
  • The employee will be subject to temperature extremes in various parts of the facility
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, the employee will occasionally be exposed to noise in various locations of the plant

Specific Job Duties:

  • This position is responsible for using the computer managed maintenance system tools and procedures to properly document all operating conditions, unscheduled repair efforts, scheduled preventative and scheduled predictive efforts.
  • Confers with operators and observes, tests and evaluates operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose cause of malfunction(s).
  • Operates and maintains in good working order all components and equipment of the power yard systems that includes but, is not limited to the anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems and stem generation systems.
  • Interfaces with regulatory agencies such as but not limited to: State and Federal Government Agencies, Insurance Inspectors and Company Inspectors.
  • Disassembles machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
  • Examines parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear.
  • Repair, replace, adjust and align components of machinery and equipment.
  • Cleans and lubricates parts, equipment and machinery.
  • Test-runs repaired machinery and equipment to verify adequacy of repairs.
  • Fabricates replacement parts.
  • Welds to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts and assemble new equipment.
  • Requisitions parts and materials.
  • Repairs and replaces electrical wiring and components.
  • Records repairs and maintenance performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Member of the emergency response team.
  • Ability to work on AC/DC power and control voltages.
  • Has all required tools to perform job and carriers basic tools and test equipment at all times and maintains such in good working order at all times.
  • Maintains basic computer skills in order to perform maintenance and repair on computer controlled machinery.
  • Works on PLC controls, VFD drives and demonstrates a good understanding of instrumentation.
  • Effectively troubleshoots electrical, mechanical and process issues in an independent manner.
  • Proper use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Communicates effectively and works well with all employees, visitors and vendors.
  • Reliable and available to work any shift and holidays as per job bid and current contract language.
  • Work overtime as required as per contract language.
  • Performs other duties as may be required.


Working in a manufacturing or warehouse environment, you will be walking, standing and engaging in movement throughout the day, and occasionally to frequently be required to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Due to a large variety of job duties (both routine and non-routine), certain duties also may involve, a variety of physical activities including bending, lifting, stooping, turning, twisting, pushing, pulling, raising arms above shoulders and head, standing, working in enclosed areas, climbing stairs or ladders, and operating heavy machinery. The noise level in the work environment can vary but noise is usually low to moderate.

At times, you may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety gloves, hearing protection, a respirator or dust mask, protective footwear and protective clothing or uniforms. Work may be performed in cold and/or hot temperatures and the environment can be dusty. Physical requirements further include the ability to engage in productive and collaborative communication with co-workers and work may need to be performed during non-standard hours, including nights and weekends. At times, the ability to work overtime also may be required. The ability to perform these requirements is necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
