Job Description

As the Manager, Hardware Development, you will oversee a team of hardware, layout and power experts. The expectation is that you build a high performing team that delivers leading edge hardware that supports our roadmap in a timely manner and helps us to build our position as a market leader in the group 1 UAV space.

The Manager, Hardware Development will:

  • Lead our hardware engineering team by example and create a high-performing team, that is highly motivated and self-driven
  • Design light weight UAV electronics (boards, flexes, cables) for aircraft, payloads, and accessories
  • Take the electronics design through schematic, layout, multiple prototype cycles, verification, and into production, while following our Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly rules
  • Select best in class components (everything from resistors to radios) and document your designs through schematics, block diagrams, and technical design documents
  • Guide PCB layout of complex multi-layer rigid, flex, and rigid-flex boards
  • Work closely with other hardware engineers and multi-disciplinary teams (RF, mechanical, product, software, verification, etc.) to deliver the best systems
  • Drive board level verification and validation activities including signal integrity and power integrity checks
  • Work with our supply chain team and external vendors to resolve board DFM, fabrication, component and test issues in time for NPI and production builds
  • Be hands-on in system level and board-level debugging of prototypes and in-market products
  • Research and prototype new technologies for integration in FLIR products
  • Optimize designs for reliability, cost, weight, testability, and manufacturing
  • Participate in the hardware teams design review processes
  • Some travel may occasionally be required
  • Other tasks as assigned to support the overall goals of the FLIR organization

Preferred Skills/Experience
  • BASc or B.Eng degree in electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • 5+ years leadership experience in electronics design, system engineering or similar
  • A demonstrable passion for innovation, building and creating things
  • Strong ability to work well with others
  • Strong ability to learn and improve skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with common signal busses like I2C, SPI, USB
  • Experience designing power supplies with switch-mode and LDO converters
  • Hands-on debugging skills with common lab equipment
  • Eligible to be certified to examine, possess and transfer items under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and legally authorized to work in Canada
