Schneider Electric has an opportunity for a Materials Engineer (Contacts) in our Cedar Rapids, Iowa location. As the Materials Engineer you provide support and expertise to our manufacturing, quality, engineering and purchasing teams in the production of metals and the engineering of metal components for use in the manufacturing of contacts.

What do you get to do in this position?

  • Utilize powder metallurgy knowledge to support the manufacturing of electrical contacts
  • Research, develop, test and analyze materials used in the manufacture of electrical distribution components and products
  • Analyze and identify improvement opportunities to increase efficiencies, reduce scrap and maintain and/or increase product performance in accordance with Schneider Electric and professional standards and customer requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in manufacturing, engineering, quality and purchasing to ensure the appropriate selection of materials for new applications
  • Troubleshoot material issues that impact the manufacturing processes of components, assemblies and the finished product
  • Utilize continuous improvement methodology to improve internal industrial processes
  • Explore complex problems using data analysis and other LEAN / Six Sigma tools
  • Work with Purchasing and the plants to continuously drive productivity in the material and process for manufacturing contacts.
  • Assist Purchasing as needed in technical assessment and qualification of all out sourced contactors and suppliers.
  • Help implement projects beyond the capability and scope of the plant, transfers to assist in annual productivity challenges.
  • Develop technical solutions for external and internal process issues in our manufacturing and fabrication processes

This job might be for you if:

  • Bachelor's Degree Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering or related field is required.
  • 3-5 years' experience of powder metallurgy and ceramic material processing is required.
  • Analytical skills, ability to use advanced methods and technologies to research the properties of metals and devise improved techniques for extraction and manufacturing
  • Problem-solving skills to determine innovative ways to improve processes and resolve issues related to manufacturing and design
  • Capable of applying scientific reasoning to industrial situations
  • Must possess verbal and written communication skills necessary to convey technical data clearly and concisely to colleagues and customers
  • Experience using Lean/Six Sigma tools and methods (Green Belt preferred)
  • Experience with quality control tools (SPC, PFMEA, Control Plan, Gauge R&R, etc.)
  • Project Management experience a plus
