The Mechanical Design Engineer position supports and leads the design and development of innovative new products within the Advanced Surgical Innovations unit and specifically the Surgical Stapling Platform. Your new role will have you reporting to the North Haven Campus under the current flex hybrid model.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading and supporting design concepts or changes that are primarily mechanical in nature. Engineering support may be independent or under the direction of a lead engineer and/or project manager. The key at being successful in this job is the ability to multi-task, work effectively cross functionally, drive projects to closure within specified milestones and be flexible on project assignments.

SURGICAL INNOVATIONS sets the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) by creating innovative surgical products and services that focus on obesity and diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, abdominal wall, pelvic region, and the head and neck.

A Day in the Life

  • Key member of design team responsible for delivering a quality driven cost-effective product that meets all the agreed upon customer requirements.
  • Work effectively with Manufacturing, Supply Management, Quality, Reliability, Materials and Regulatory functions to be a valued team member.
  • Designs and redesigns high complexity medical devices and subsystems.
  • Collaborate with peers to manage the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements.
  • Train and mentor others in specialized area.
  • Adhere to safety policy and procedures.
  • Continue to develop skills through additional training and educational programs

Must Have ( Minimum Requirements ):

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field with minimum 2 years of experience in medical device design and development
  • OR advance degree in Mechanical Engineer or related Engineering field with 0 years of experience in medical device design and development.

Nice to Have ( Preferred Qualifications )

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field is preferred
  • Experience in bringing Medical Device designs products from concept through commercialization
  • Mechanical / Electromechanical Aptitude
  • Proven ability to identify and apply innovative solutions to solve technical challenges
  • Experienced in the use ASME drafting standards (ASME Y14.5-2009)
  • Proficiency with CETol, 3D CAD design / modeling, Pro/E or Creo and ANSYS workbench is highly desired
  • Basic understanding of analytical engineering tools and applications. Experience with tolerance, kinematics, dynamic and finite element analysis is desirable.
  • Experienced with the application of basic DRM, DFM and DFA practices
  • Experience designing, prototyping, developing and qualify components as part of a product or system
  • Knowledgeable in the manufacturing of plastic and metal component fabrication disciplines
  • Understanding of PDM system Windchill
  • Proficient in the application of basic and advanced statistical / data analysis. (MS Excel and Minitab)
  • Drive for innovation, creative problem solving and team collaboration
  • Familiarity with medical device regulations and various technical standards
