It provides audiences with a broad array of local and national programs across all mediaTV, radio, online, and mobile, including PBS and NPR programs as well as locally produced series, podcasts, and specials. Its four digital TV channels, and two radio networks present news, jazz and classical music, documentaries, talk, drama, plus cultural and educational programming.

NEPMs local financial activities include: budgeting and variance analysis, forecasting to inform operations and strategy, cash flow management, grant compliance, accounts receivable and accounts payable management, payment processing, and enforcing financial policies and procedures. All transactional activities are processed at GBHs headquarters.


Reporting to NEPM's President, with a dotted line to GBH's Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance and Accounting works closely with GBHs accounting, grants, treasury, tax, and budgeting teams to perform all finance-related functions. This position will support a culture of compliance and adherence to policies and procedures, internal controls, funder terms and conditions, and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will work with NEPMs management team and be a highly communicative, hands-on, and participative NEPM manager who will be responsible for implementing and maintaining NEPM and GBHs financial policies and procedures and develop a strong grasp of NEPMs overall operations and strategy. This role requires skilled knowledge in nonprofit accounting and grants management.


Finance and Accounting

  • Manage all local accounting and finance processes working closely with GBHs accounting team, including:
    • Billing and collections
    • Payables management
    • Cash management
    • Draws on lines of credit
    • Month-end reconciliations
    • Journal entry preparation
    • Reconciliation of sub-financial systems to the general ledger
    • Monthly closing and consolidation
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • All accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, including those for UMass employees
    • NEPMs procurement policies, procedures, and vendor contracts
    • All laws and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Serve as a liaison between GBH corporate finance team and NEPM operations to ensure accuracy, timelines,s and completeness of NEPMs financial records
  • Work with GBH corporate accounting department /auditors in performing financial audits and implementing auditor recommendations
  • Assist in the documentation of NEPMs financial policies and procedures manual
  • Work with GBH tax department in the preparation of NEPMs annual tax returns and other regulatory filings as required
  • Prepare quarterly GAAP financial statements including, Statement of Activities, Statement of Financial Position, and Statement of Cash Flows
  • Work with the Treasurer of the NEPM Board of Directors to provide all documentation and financial needs of the Board

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Work with NEPM staff, the NEPM Board and Board Treasurer, and GBH leadership in business planning and analysis
  • Lead the development of NEPMs annual operating budget in collaboration with NEPM leadership and GBHs FP&A team: Present the budget and three-year plan for approval by NEPM's Finance Committee, NEPM's Board of Directors, and GBH leadership and
  • Track revenue and expenses against budget/prior year and provide monthly variance analyses to NEPM and GBH leadership
  • Present financial results and forecast to NEPM Finance Committee during quarterly meetings

Grant Management

  • Work with NEPM's Grant Writer/Manager; NEPM's Senior Director of Development; and GBH Project Finance staff to provide accurate and timely project budgets and financial reports that follow GBH standard operating procedures for pre-award and post-award grants management
  • Work with appropriate NEPM project and development staff to develop project budgets as needed for proposals
  • Track expenses against approved project budgets and provide NEPM project and development staff with monthly actuals versus budget reports and estimates to complete
  • Provide financial reporting externally to funders as required
  • Work with GBH Project Finance on grants accounting needs, including, but not limited to:
    • Invoicing funders
    • Allocating expenses to funding sources
    • Journal entries
    • Payroll corrections
    • Project code set-up
    • Monthly/quarterly/year-end close for grants
  • Work with the UMass Amherst Office of University Relations; GBH Accounting; and the Director of Project Finance and Grants as necessary to ensure accurate and timely submission of NEPM's Annual Financial Report to CPB

Treasury Management

  • Develop daily, monthly, and long-term cash flow forecasts
  • Work closely with GBHs Senior Treasury Manager to manage NEPMs banking relationships, including loans and line of credit
  • Ensure sufficient cash flow to support operations
  • Facilitate the sale of stock donations
  • Administer all merchant service accounts
  • Manage endowment relationships with investment managers
  • Oversee the process of daily incoming payments and timely bank deposits


  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and nonprofit accounting required
  • Experience with grants management and reporting required
  • Experience with capital campaigns and restricted contributions required
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required
  • Experience with Workday is highly desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively
  • Self-motivated and self-directed and a strong team player
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant strongly desired


Bachelors degree in accounting, business administration, or relevant field required.

6 - 8 years of successful experience at the senior accounting manager or higher level with at least 2 years of auditing experience.
