Main purpose of the role:

  • Member of collegiate Legal team working primarily in relation to the BGC Group and its various brands including BGC, GFI, Sunrise and FI Solutions. The businesses are primarily financial services but also include insurance and real estate as well
  • This is a visible role with regular interaction with business people and management. There is a genuine global dimension to the remit as well as substantial autonomy and responsibility. The environment is fast paced and the customer base is very demanding therefore the role requires a person who is able to deal with pressure, can commit to deadlines and work at a good pace. The contractual hours are 9 am to 6 pm but these are regarded as the minimum working hours
  • The role is based in Hong Kong covering the APAC region where the BGC Group have businesses including Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, PRC and Philippines. The role will be principally assisting two qualified lawyers whom are servicing the BGC Group's businesses in APAC
  • The role will benefit from the experience and resources of the wider BGC Group and Cantor Fitzgerald legal teams, which are based in London
  • If the chosen candidate is successful, and subject to the on-going requirements of the team and the business, the role will gradually lead to greater responsibility and autonomy

Key responsibilities:

  • Commercial - involved in reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements and providing legal advice on business issues. Agreements include confidentiality agreements, introducing broker agreements, commission sharing and netting agreements, terms of business, and intra group agreements
  • General corporate and commercial advice
  • M & A - periodically assisting M & A practice as part of a team, including confidentiality, SPA and related documents
  • Litigation - may become involved in claims by and against the Group
  • Employment - drafting and reviewing employment documentation including employment agreements, termination documents and other employment related documents
  • Projects - periodically advising on corporate projects, which may include new offices, reorganisations and joint ventures
  • Interaction with a wide range of depts. including tax, HR, employment, finance etc.
  • Administrative tasks to assist the Legal team including setting up filing systems and assisting with the management of legal invoices

Skills / experience required:

  • Experience of working within the financial sector particularly welcome, although would also consider candidates with other relevant in house or private practice paralegal experience
  • The team is always very lively and busy so the candidate should be able to deal with competing demands in a mature and sensible fashion
  • Ability to work both autonomously and with others in a small team
  • Robust but engaging personality essential. This will be a visible role with very close interaction with other departments both in the front and back office
  • Adaptable to demands placed on a busy in house legal department
  • Good academics required
  • Chinese skills, including reading and writing
