JOB SUMMARY:

This is an intermediate-level position for a product designer. This individual must be proficient with collaboratively facilitating the design of product initiatives, making sense of user needs and delivering designs that elevate our clients' experience. We are looking for a designer who thrives in engaging clients and internal partners, mapping patterns, and busting complexity in partnership with product and engineering leads in the pursuit to craft experiences for our clients that will support their goal to operate as high-value strategic business partners within their organizations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Become deeply familiar with Vertex's mission, vision, practices, market, customers, services, and systems.
  • Build trust through exemplifying embedded user-centered product design to the organization.
  • Socialize a deep and shared understanding within Vertex of our customers and their problems, their unmet needs, their behavior within our products and services, and the key frustrations they encounter.
  • Meet with key stakeholders in product management, program management, and technology to identify, plan, and prioritize the design needs and opportunities, articulating the key customer problems or needs and the desired business and customer outcomes of each project.
  • Partner with engineering to ensure the inclusion of technical constraints, ideas, and opportunities in the design process.
  • Partner with sales and support to ensure inclusion of internal perspectives and direct customer observations in the design process.
  • Using the right-size research and design methodologies and tools of your choice, facilitate workshops with the team to frame problems, gather requirements, generate shared understanding, work through tradeoffs, produce generative design ideas, and deliver optimal solutions.
  • Continuously learn through self-study, engagement with the design community, and company-expensed professional development opportunities (e.g. books, workshops, conferences, certifications, etc.).
  • Succinctly advocate your efforts, point of view, and rationale in support of the voice of the customer in design critiques, reviews, meetings, stakeholder presentations, and other company-wide design efforts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Can apply the Lean UX principles of collaborative design over designing on an island, solving user problems over designing the next cool feature, applying appropriate tools over following a rigid plan, and nimble design over heavy comps or specifications.
  • Can demonstrate professional contribution to enterprise-level web-based services. Your portfolio will be requested and reviewed during the interview process.
  • Can confidently plan and follow well-established approaches to solve problems.
  • Can demonstrate knowledge and application of one or more design competencies (e.g. user research, content strategy, information architecture, interaction design, user interface design, visual design, usability testing, etc.).
  • Can proficiently use any one of the following common design tools or platforms (Invision, Figma, Marvel, XD, Studio, Sketch).
  • Literate with front-end technologies and standards (e.g. HTML 5, CSS 3, WCAG compliance), how these inform your work, and how to effectively communicate with developers and architects in their own language.
  • Integrate seamlessly into Agile Scrum and Kanban teams.
  • Articulate the relationship between design decisions and HCI principles, accessibility requirements, best practices, and heuristics.
