Job Description and Responsibilities

As the Manager of Production Planning and Control, you will use your knowledge, skills, and abilities to align raw material supply with open capacity of our mill as well as downstream work centers to ensure material is produced as efficiently as possible and able to ship to our customers on time. You will be asked to use critical thinking to overcome challenges in the production schedule or supply chain related delivery issues. As the primary person in charge of production planning, you will be tasked with building the tactical plan to achieve the goals of the business unit and translate that plan into detailed instructions for your internal and external teams to execute. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who can manage capacity and throughput of our mill, has strong written and verbal communication skills and can build relationships with both their team members and downstream/upstream partners.

The Manager of Production Planning and Control will perform a variety of critical tasks to support the day-to-day operations of the business unit. You will closely work with Operations, Supply Chain, Inventory Management, IT, Sales, and Technical Services team members. You will be responsible building robust procedures in an effort to produce repeatable results in a timely manner. In this position you will also be tasked with the development of the planning and scheduling team reporting to you as their continued development will be critical to achieve sustained success for the organization. Responsibilities include:

  • Own all aspects of operational and tactical planning for Portland business unit, building robust procedures in an effort to produce repeatable results in a timely manner
  • Participate in SIOP, working cross functionally with the business to determine optimal production plans
  • Oversee the facility master schedule and overall schedule attainment, identifying opportunities for improvement and streamlining processes
  • Develop and manage a production planning process for the organization that fully aligns supply chain and production schedules with the requirements of forecasts and customer orders
  • Develop systems to effectively manage the production schedule, communicate expectations to all levels of the organization (with associated key performance indicators) and drive work accordingly on the production line
  • Maintain planning metrics and identify process improvement for demand and schedule stability in order to improve on-time delivery for production to meet customer expectations
  • Monitor product variation and identify continuous improvement opportunities to reduce variation and improve production repeatability and efficiency
  • Track, report, and help resolve all issues blocking on-time delivery (engineering, supply chain, labor, process, training, quality, etc.)
  • Take responsibility for collaborating with supply chain and operations to achieve delivery targets and financial objectives
  • Be the key escalation point for issues regarding on time delivery
  • Analyze inventories to determine how to increase inventory turns, reduce waste, or optimize material flow
  • Participate in sales and operations planning process to help define future plans and ensure we execute against them
  • Furthering the development of direct reports within the planning and scheduling team
  • Be a student of current industry trends, ensuring that the department is developing its employees with sustained success and continuous improvement in mind

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain, Business Management, Operations Management, or similar field is required; MBA or Masters Degree in applicable field preferred
  • Five or more years management experience
  • Eight or more years combined experience in planning, scheduling, supply chain, or inventory management
  • Demonstrated analytical ability including a systems approach to problem solving
  • Ability to analyze data and summarize the results in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to clearly explain financial impact of each scenario/recommendation
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • A commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience developing and reporting performance metrics
  • Highly effective communication skills (written and verbal) with all levels of personnel
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Utilize talent development and performance management process to build a strong, effective team with forethought around succession planning
  • Motivational leader with the ability to develop high performing teams
  • Prior manufacturing experience preferred, specifically in steel or a discrete manufacturing environment
  • Background in ERP implementation and/or APICS CPIM/CSCP certification is a plus
