Project Manager, Manufacturing Engineering

3D Systems
Littleton, CO 80120
  • Job Code
    190000LT

Position Overview

The 3D Systems site in Littleton, Colorado is growing rapidly and needs a skilled Engineering Project Manager to manage a significant expansion of our capabilities. This position will be an integral part of the Advanced Manufacturing team, whose mission is to develop, scale, execute, and sustain processes for metals and plastics additive manufacturing (and related post-processing), both in-house and outsourced. The scope of projects to be managed will range from internally-focused process improvements to multi-million dollar, cross-functional initiatives to implement large capacity expansions under tight deadlines and high customer expectations. This position will require significant interaction with suppliers, customers, and our sister site in Leuven, Belgium.

Organization

As part of the Healthcare unit of 3D Systems, the Littleton facility acts as a service bureau to enable customers without the expertise, capital, or desire to additively manufacture their products. We are experts in digital workflows, patient-specific devices, and five different kinds of 3D printing. The Advanced Manufacturing department serves our Contract Manufacturing product line (both metal and plastics additive manufacturing), as well as 3D Systems own Virtual Surgical Planning product offerings. Our Contract Manufacturing customer base is primarily medical device OEMs, although we also participate in aerospace, defense, and other industrial applications of additive manufacturing. Our pace of growth is only matched by the pace at which our customers expect their new and innovative products to be delivered.

Performance Objectives

The following performance objectives will determine job success for this position:

  • Manage Major Manufacturing Initiatives: Working from a high level project charter, implement large capacity increases to meet critical customer production plans. Manage each of the 10 knowledge areas according to PMBOK. Gather inputs, prepare schedules, marshal resources, and work with stakeholders to meet objectives. Using best practices and appropriate project management processes, manage schedule, budget, and scope. Track project progress at a detailed level, and report to management and customers. Escalate issues as needed. Proactively manage project performance and risk, and maintain extensive project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage Manufacturing Support Projects: Collaborate closely with various functional groups, such as production, manufacturing engineering, planning, facilities, quality, and outside suppliers, to identify, plan, and execute projects for improvements in quality, cost, or capacity.
  • Re-design Business Processes : Refine business processes that may not be tied to production, but which do affect the manufacturing organization as a whole. Work cross-functionally with stakeholders to determine the problem or opportunity, design the solution, and implement structural, procedural, and documentation changes to realize the benefit of the change.
  • Develop Project Management Methodologies : Expand the site's competencies by developing and implementing project management methodologies and tools tailored to the needs of the organization. Act as a mentor for project management skill development at the Littleton site.
  • Develop Manufacturing Processes : Serve the manufacturing production team to improve existing processes and augment capabilities with new processes. Specify, justify financially, develop, and implement new machines to increase capacity or reduce labor. Participate in process validation as necessary.
  • Resolve technical issues : Keep the production floor running by addressing urgent and long-term issues. Document the results of investigation and resolution through the CAPA, NMR, or Deviation processes.
  • Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Required
    • PMP or similar project management coursework/certification would be a plus.

    Knowledge, Skills, Experience:

    • Minimum 8 years of experience providing engineering support to manufacturing operations in medical device or other highly-regulated industry.
    • Minimum 4 years of experience managing engineering projects utilizing formal project management methodologies (may be concurrent with engineering experience).

    • The successful candidate will have a track record of technical and project leadership accomplishments that show they are able to make good technical judgments and lead complex, mission-critical projects.

    • Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to customer service (both internal and external) are a must. This position will involve significant supplier and customer interaction.

    • Because we are primarily focused on medical devices, a successful candidate needs to have a substantial background in the medical device industry and extensive knowledge of ISO13485, particularly design controls, production controls, and process validation.

    • With the need to review technical information from aerospace and defense customers, a successful candidate for this position will be a U.S. Person.

    • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.

    • Experience in additive and subtractive manufacturing, 3D modeling and design, and process improvement are a plus.
