OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE

  • Serve as a key scientist within our early translational oncology team that combines drug program development with laboratory testing (using histology-based platforms) to help develop the next generation of immunomodulating therapies for our patients.
  • Directly embed within preclinical teams to help develop translational strategies, formulate investigative plans, execute laboratory studies, and deliver data analyses that inform critical decision making throughout the preclinical lifecycle and across multiple drug programs.
  • Identify translational biomarkers and testing strategies that provide a continuum between preclinical and clinical development for improving patient benefit in our early-phase clinical trials.

SCOPE

The Scientist II will work within the Integrated Translational Technologies Laboratory and will provide scientific expertise and investigative laboratory support across our leading immune-oncology drug development programs. This position provides a high degree of integration across diverse teams so that new technologies, informatics, and tumor modelling resources can be optimally leveraged and purposefully directed to the identification and refinement of translational biomarker strategies that bridge preclinical research with clinical trial development.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Cross-Program Collaborations To Drive Translational Research:
    • Embed within a matrixed team and provide scientific expertise to help guide the development of translational strategies that can rationally direct clinical development of the drug asset.
    • Design, implement, and delver research testing that identify translational biomarkers for a given program. Present results in an interactive format that facilitates discussion and planning of future development directions.
    • Serve as a liaison with academic groups, biotechnology companies, and CROs to establish collaborations that provide complementary avenues for translational biomarker discovery.
  • Technologies and Laboratory Testing:
    • Become highly proficient in the development and use of IHC, RNA ISH, and multiplexed immunofluorescence platforms to identify mechanisms of therapy-mediated immune modulation across a number of our priority drug programs.
    • Develop assays in the early translation space that have clinical relevance for patient selection and cancer indication selection in clinical trial.
    • Identify and manage the development and/or implementation of innovative testing platforms with technology and academic collaborators.
    • Run key investigative studies in the laboratory and perform relevant data analysis either independently or together with computational teams.

DIMENSIONS AND ASPECTS

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

  • Serve as a scientific expert with broad oncology biomarker knowledge, particularly as it relates to immune oncology.
  • Become an expert in histology assays (IHC, RNA ISH), multiplexed cell phenotyping technologies (multiplexed immunofluorescence) and spatial image analysis (HALO software).
  • Apply above expertise to identify translational signatures across preclinical development stages and provide a bridge into clinical development.
  • Provide effective project management skills.
  • Effectively work across multiple drug programs.
  • Uses high level direction to independently develop and execute research plans while effectively managing workload and expectations.
  • Utilizes own scientific expertise and group informatics support to interpret results. Prepare/deliver information to group to influence direction, departmental goals, and/or business decisions.
  • Embeds within internal teams with diverse expertise to guide the development of translational strategies and to develop novel research capabilities.
  • Participates in external interactions with CROs and collaborators.
  • Work with key technology leaders and academic collaborators to develop innovative technologies and develop key resources that can expand capabilities at the departmental level.
  • May have direct reports.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • PhD, or internationally recognized equivalent degree, in science is required.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience in an academic or pharmaceutical setting is required (i.e., post-doc).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including writing, reviewing and editing scientific documents.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and positive influencing abilities.
  • Ability to work and drive decision-making within a multi-disciplinary, multi-regional, and matrixed teams.
  • Good fit with Takeda core values and leadership principles.
  • Right attitude (agile, curious, open-minded, can-do mindset).
  • Strong desire to put patients first.
  • Experience in immuno-oncology and translational biomarkers is required.
  • Strong laboratory skills related to histology-based testing (IHC, RNA ISH, mIF) and data analysis.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to drive to or fly to various meetings or R&D sites including overnight trips
  • Some international travel may be required.
  • This role is considered a hybrid position and you must be able to work onsite in Cambridge, MA on average 2-3 days per week.
