Research Technician

(1 year term position)


The Marine Microbial Ecology Group investigates marine microbes, from the molecules exchanged to ecosystem interactions, with the overarching goal of understanding trophic transfer of photosynthetically fix carbon and the future trajectories of phytoplankton communities. The Research Technician’s tasks will include the following:  Analyze a complex chemostat experiment from the perspective of photophysiology, carbon fixation pathways, RNA transcription and ecogenomic markers; to analyze flow cytometry data to better understand changes to cell size; to perform statistical studies necessary to publish this research and to write a manuscript on it. There is an emphasis on vitamin exchanges in the ocean, and thus the Research Technician will perform a vitamin chemostat experiment.

Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Biology or related field is required.  Must have demonstrated experience in the following areas: 


Perform and analyze a complex bioreactor chemostat experiments 

Experience in analyzing carbon fixation pathways, chemical data

Experience in generating and analyzing genomic data (including metagenomics)

Knowledge of statistical approaches for analysis of omic data 

Experience working at sea, willingness to go to sea for specified periods.


In addition, the incumbent must possess excellent writing skills and be able to work with diverse groups of people.
