Position Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for sales efforts, growth of relationships within the Associations’ territory; credit administration; and ongoing maintenance and management of large, complex, high-touch retail commercial accounts. Actively market specialized loan and financial products, and originate and maintain a volume of loans from $125 million to $250 million for the Associations’ portfolio. Financial needs may be complex, including credit needs from $5 million to $40 million. Develop an in-depth understanding of the assigned industry along with each customer and prospect in order to provide innovative and customer centric products and services to meet the needs of these accounts. Analyze complex financial information, make credit recommendations and provide credit packages and services, in conjunction with the credit analyst, to meet and exceed the needs and expectations of the retail commercial customer. Meet marketing and servicing goals, ensuring quality and customer experience standards are met. Work in a team environment to accomplish team goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to: 

  1. Represent the Associations as the Commercial Lender for select large, industry-specific, and often complex commercial retail accounts. Maintain a portfolio of approximately $125-250 million of commitments. Market credit and related services directly to large retail commercial accounts. Design innovative credit packages in the $5-40 million range that meet customer and prospective customer needs. Originate, structure, and make credit recommendations; and facilitate the closing process.
  2. Maintain a close working relationship with Retail team members specializing in similar industry segments as both new and existing customers are solicited and served.
  3. Provide “value add” products and enhancements to Retail Commercial Lending customers (i.e. benchmarking and financial planning tools; improvement of customer financial information, risk assessment, and peer groups).
  4. Build and nurture close working relationships with Agribusiness Capital team members specializing in similar industry segments as customers are solicited and serviced.
  5. Develop and implement business plans that will increase the Associations’ market share in the assigned customer segment(s). Conduct sales calls to influencers, prospects and customers; routinely update and maintain prospect/customer marketing and call planning information on customer contact software. Develop prospect and influencer lists and marketing plans.      
  6. Maintain expertise in the specific industry segment and the financial services industry, keeping abreast of industry trends, competitive market conditions and lending practices.
  7. Be visible within the assigned specialized industry segment by sharing industry information and advocating for the Farm Credit System both internally and publically. Actively engage in industry events both locally and regionally through public interaction via presentations or information that reflects the Associations’ expertise within the specialized industry segments.
  8. Organize the development of industry specific knowledge sharing materials to further enhance industry segment expertise and knowledge sharing for the benefit of the Associations.  
  9. Coordinate with Farm Credit Leasing (FCL) partners and crop insurance teammates to identify opportunities for new leasing and crop insurance business to existing customers and prospects. 

Additional functions of the position may include:

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree in agriculture economics, business administration, finance, accounting, agriculture production or a closely related field. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8-10 years of lending experience required, and 8-10 years of agribusiness credit underwriting experience preferred.  

Duties require: 

  • Strong passion, experience and knowledge of the specific retail industry segment (i.e. swine, beef, crop and/or agribusiness).
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and effectively demonstrate team building attitude and skills.
  • Strong financial and credit analysis skills, with proven abilities in assessing risk and rewards in a competitive, retail lending environment.
  • Demonstrated abilities in strong sales, developing new business, and leadership
  • Excellent negotiating and influencing skills.
  • Strong decision making skills and a willingness to support and take responsibility for those decisions.
  • Proficient in using Relationship, Agrilytic, Credit Path and other applicable computer systems including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer.
  • Ability to obtain a general working knowledge of the Associations’ processes and policies.
  • Ability to execute and focus on a customer-centric philosophy vs. a product driven philosophy with all customer relationships
  • Ability to service broad and diverse industries, with in-depth knowledge of specific industries.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking and presentation skills, and the ability and willingness to represent the Associations.
  • Accountable for a high level of commercial lending knowledge and expertise, and be recognized within the Associations’ retail business area as an expert and one of the premier lenders in the assigned industry. 

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

Extensive contact with other Retail Commercial team members and with other Association teammates to include Financial Officers, Appraisal, Legal, Finance, Credit, Agribusiness Capital, and the Associations’ senior leadership. Meet with customers, applicants, and influencers as needed in conjunction with prospecting and loan servicing activities. 

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to use computer. This involves reading the screen and keying/typing information.
  • Proficient in Windows environment using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer.
  • Ability to reason, judge, compare, calculate, evaluate and critique such information as written materials, numerical data, responses to customer needs and/or other work related activities.
  • Ability to complete work in an acceptable timeframe and manage a variety of detailed tasks and responsibilities simultaneously and with accuracy to meet deadlines, goals, and objectives and satisfy internal and external customer needs related to the job.
  • Ability to understand and explain various subject matter and consult on concepts, programs, terminology and methods.
  • Ability to operate the telephone and respond to calls and in-person inquiries.
  • Ability to move about the office with occasional reaching and bending.
  • Ability to successfully interact with and represent the organization to staff, officers, board members, customers, industry specialists, and the public at all levels.
  • Ability to use a keyboard/calculator/computer. This involves reading the screen and keying/typing information.
  • Ability to use and understand various computer software related to carrying out essential responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to travel by auto or commercial transportation (up to 50% with frequent overnight travel) to carry out essential responsibilities.
