Job Description

The Washington Post Live Sales Director is a crucial member of the team. This position carries global responsibility for sponsorship revenue. Washington Post Live is the editorial forums division of The Washington Post. Leveraging the print and digital assets of The Washington Post, these in-person forums cover a range of topics covering technology, business, politics and defense. Programs are held live and are also streamed online. Most are recapped via editorial special reports in The Washington Post both in print and online. The Sales Director is responsible for direct sponsorship sales, and for supporting the company's various advertising sales teams as they introduce Washington Post Live sponsorships to advertisers. This position will demand a strong mix of marketing, business, technology and communication/collaboration skills and the ability to thrive in a start-up yet leverage the assets of a large organization.


  • Develop unique sponsorship packaging and compelling presentations in order to articulate them to prospective sponsors
  • Partner with the print and digital advertising sales teams to build integrated packages and opportunities and to ensure events opportunities are being marketed in all outgoing proposals
  • Serve as a trusted advisor internally when it comes to representing client needs and partner with the larger WP Live team to build opportunities that ladder up to those objectives
  • Cultivate positive relationships through a consultative process involving on-site meetings and presentations to decision makers at all levels
  • Represent The Washington Post brand within the client and advertising group in a positive, substantive and enthusiastic manner
  • Speak to senior-level marketing executives within client organizations, understanding their needs and articulating how face-to-face conferences fit within the marketing mix
  • Work with the General Manager of Washington Post Live, developing targets and forecasts for the sponsorship revenue stream
  • Achieve personal sales goals by year's end with a passion to facilitating overall team revenue goals
  • Possess persuasive written and verbal communications skills


  • 7+ years of experience in a similar sales role
  • Management experience as this person will be managing a team
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing responsibilities with a positive attitude
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with Newsroom, events staff, and external clients
  • Willingness and flexibility to occasionally work unusual hours given the nature of the events business
  • Ability to think strategically and act quickly on new development opportunities
