This position leads a multi-functional group that creates the global project management strategy to realize Takedas overall vision. In doing so, this position will manage people and resources to achieve high levels of performance and improve the overall performance of the Takeda Global R&D marketed/ established products portfolio. The position maximizes business results through continuous improvement in processes and in the organizations ability to execute programs and projects near or post Loss of Exclusivity (LOE)This position oversees responsibility for the planning and execution of global R&D project activities, including budgets, for compounds across multiple therapeutic areas. These activities include the planning towards milestones, go/no go decision points, proactively identifying issues, resolving conflicts and communicating project related issues to senior executive management. The position establishes long-range plans and goals for Project Management at Takeda, provides leadership and vision to maximize and protect the value of products in the Marketed Products portfolio, and leads strategic and operational planning for global expansion. This position also manages transition of pipeline products into Marketed Products Group (MPG), various R&D operational activities, and product goals and KPIs that support the overall R&D objectives


Strategic Planning and Execution

  • Leads the project management function in setting organizational strategies, goals, priorities and long-term plans and schedules. Aligns functional goals with long range business needs and strategies of Takeda.
  • Provides strategic, process, and operational leadership to global/ established product teams and multiple R&D functions in maximizing and protecting the value of the Marketed Products portfolio .
  • Partners with other GPM Heads, Functional Heads of Project Management, and the Center of Operational Excellence to set the vision and direction for Project Management
  • Reports on progress of projects, issues/plans, and schedules to MPG leadership and Takeda executive management through internal or external reviews of projects across multiple therapeutic areas.
  • Oversees the development and execution of the annual and mid-range plan, as well as the annual goals for the Marketed Products portfolio in alignment with corporate strategy and goals to be approved through R&D Leadership.
  • Working through the MPG Global Program Managers, creates project management strategies for global activity with Japan, US, EU, and other worldwide territories for global submission/approvals as appropriate.
  • Leads the strategic definition, creation, documentation, and maintenance of Project Management standards and processes as well as promotes the use of best R&D practices across functions within MPG.
  • Visibly advocates and supports key business initiatives: Evaluates new opportunities (i.e.: in-licensing, out-licensing or withdrawals, impact of change in market conditions or new regulatory requirements, or availability of new project data) and provides overall support for initiatives to maximize and protect the value of the portfolio. Establishes Alliance Management best practices within the GPM function to ensure strong relations with our partners.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Leads the project budget process in conjunction with Finance and MPG management.
  • Responsible for the functional and administrative budgets for designated costs center(s) in MPG. Works with MPG Leadership Team to create budget; monitors expenses and participates in the budget update process to achieve MPG and R&D financial goals.
  • Responsible for project development operating budgets to monitor and control expenditures; manages variances between budgeted and actual expenditures of time, dollars, and personnel while meeting overall MPG needs.
  • Continued development of best practices to optimize spend to meet portfolio needs.

Resource and Issue Management

  • Responsible for resource allocation within MPG Global Program Management , and to consolidate resource requests and negotiate appropriate resources across functional areas to support global project team activities.
  • Manages internal and external resources (people, information, technologies, time, and capital); allocates resources appropriately, given organization, group and individual goals and objectives to align with business imperatives.
  • Secures and allocates resources required to execute on MPG/ R&D strategies and key initiatives.
  • Proactively identifies project issues before they arise and develops contingency plans; communicates project-related issues to senior executive management and manages issues to resolution.
  • Facilitates Office Hours review process to ensure resolution of project issues.
  • Consults with MPG Development Operations to deliver accurate and timely clinical management information to enable the organization to focus on key priorities and enhance its ability to deliver work (e.g., studies/projects) on-time and on-budget (including proficient use of systems to improve reporting or access to data).

Change Management

  • Directs change management process in modifying project team structure to maximize efficiencies and realize MPG vision, including training functions cross-divisionally and globally.
  • Proactively responds to the dynamics of a changing marketplace; directs adjustments in functional or cross-functional plans in response to changes in strategic direction.
  • Maximizes business results through continuous process improvements.

Contributes to the creation and maintenance of systems/ databases for the purpose of tracking, trending, learning, and improving decisions regarding program performance and continuance.

Staff Management / Training and Development

  • Selects, develops, manages and coaches direct reports, as well as develops future project management capabilities of indirect reports; serves as mentor across Global Program Management
  • Provides managerial, strategic and tactical leadership to MPG GPM staff who are responsible for leading the individual marketed/established product programs.
  • Leads the design and implementation of global Project Management policies, processes and systems; ensures that all staff are welltrained and operating according to best-practices, policies and SOPs.
  • Assures that appropriate training and education programs are in place that meet long term strategies and goals of Takeda and personnel development.
  • Ensures consistent application and knowledge of project management methodologies, processes and tools across the function.



  • Bachelors Degree science or business-related field
  • Minimum of 15 years experience in large-scale research and drug development in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Minimum 10 years experience with increasingly complex pharmaceutical projects in a multi-disciplinary, global environment including strategy development and execution
  • Minimum of 8 years people management experience including demonstration of leadership skills required to manage matrix teams as well as direct reports
  • Managed multiple NCE/NBE global approvals


  • Advanced degree in science or business is desired; MS, PhD, PharmD preferred
  • Broad business orientation is highly preferred

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience with project management systems and methodology to support consistency in project management across all development projects
  • Must have an understanding and experience with worldwide Regulatory submissions such as INDs, NDAs, IMPDs, and MAAs in a number of different therapeutic areas
  • Expert knowledge in the overall pharmaceutical drug development process, pre-clinical through post-marketing
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus and drive resolution of issues while maintaining positive working relationships across functions; negotiation and strong persuasive abilities
  • Strong written and verbal Communication Skills: ability to express oneself clearly and concisely to external partners, vendors or with others within the team; ability to document issues and/or concerns concisely and comprehensively; ability to adjust language and/or terminology appropriate for the audience; Demonstrated ability to clearly and concisely communicate/present key information to senior management
  • Analytical and Problem Solving Skills: ability to identify the critical issues of problems or opportunities using appropriate information; determines the causes and possible solutions to the problem
  • Strategic Implementation: ability to develop, implement and monitor the overall development strategy at TGRD and integrate this strategy with global corporate goals
  • Leadership Skills: develops and uses knowledge and interpersonal skills to influence and guide others towards the accomplishment of Takedas goals and objectives. Requires the flexibility and tolerance to best manage change and differing opinions with diplomacy and competence
  • Ability to drive decision-making within a cross-functional and cross-cultural, global team structure and requires global mindset and cultural awareness in working with senior leadership in other regions and in managing cross-regional projects
  • Knowledgeable in the processes for managing and developing personnel in a cross-functional environment with a proven track record
  • Knowledgeable in budget and finance processes appropriate to the pharmaceutical industry
  • Ability to adapt to other personalities in a respectful manner that is conducive to goal achievement
  • Ability to capture knowledge within the cross-functional global organization; improve solutions, processes, and deliverables through use of information; improve information capital by contributing experience, theories, deliverables, and models for others to use
  • Management of multiple tasks of varied complexity simultaneously
  • Ability to work in a stressful and demanding environment with aggressive development timelines
  • Microsoft Project Professional, Excel, PowerPoint & Word


  • Project Management Professional certification from PMI desire


  • Willingness to travel to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips. Some international travel may be required.
