DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker is seeking a seasoned CEQA practitioner to conduct EIR peer reviews and to manage or assist with environmental planning projects of varying complexity in the Los Angeles area. One of the primary roles of this position is to assist with EIR peer review services for the City of Los Angeles and the position involves maintaining office hours at the Department of City Planning's office in Los Angeles City Hall for 1-2 days per week. The balance of the work week would be spent in either of Michael Baker's downtown Los Angeles or Long Beach offices, or working remotely. We are seeking candidates with 8 years of progressively responsible experience on CEQA projects. The ideal candidate will be capable of providing meaningful comments on EIRs prepared by other consultants for major land development projects in the City of Los Angeles. Strong client/industry relationships in southern California with public and/or private entities is also preferable.


  • The best part of being a Senior Environmental Planner at Michael Baker is that no two days will be the same. You will face different challenges every day as you manage and/or assist with complex environmental planning efforts.
  • As noted above, one of the primary roles of this position is to assist with EIR peer review services for the City of Los Angeles. You will be part of a Michael Baker team that assists the Department of City Planning with the review of EIRs for major land development projects. Examples of projects undertaken by this team include mixed-use projects in Hollywood, Venice, and the Arts District; high-rise buildings in downtown Los Angeles; hillside and other residential development in the suburban portions of Los Angeles; and commercial development throughout the City. The position involves maintaining office hours at Los Angeles City Hall for 1-2 days per week. The balance of the work week would be spent in either of Michael Baker's downtown Los Angeles or Long Beach offices, or working remotely.
  • In addition to EIR peer review services, as a Senior Environmental Planner, this position will involve the management and preparation of EIRs and other CEQA/NEPA documents for clients specifically in the Los Angeles area.
  • Team coordination, some business development pursuits and working both with our local professionals and the other offices of Michael Baker International are all in a day's work.

  • PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • You'll need a minimum of Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Planning, Ecology or a related field, a Master's degree is desirable, and a minimum of 8 years of experience, ideally, but not necessarily, including peer-review experience, in CEQA and/or NEPA document preparation.
  • To be successful, you'll need to be bright, organized, and determined; you'll also need to be able to build relationships with a wide variety of people.
  • A desire to produce first-class work products is essential; you'll need a demonstrated personal commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • You'll need to be able to quickly get up to speed on our policy, procedures and relevant software while acquiring an understanding of the company's service offerings, and the standards relevant to your projects.
