Senior Process Control Engineer Control Systems Support

Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Sr. Process Control Engineer to support the Containerboard & Cellulose Engineering Group at our headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. This position will report to the Director - Process Control Engineering and will have the ability to be home-based.


A Day In The Life Typically Includes:


Work with a group of senior staff engineers who provide technical services in process control and support capital projects. Responsibilities of this group include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assure Environmental, Health and Safety Compliance in all activities with the objective of achieving zero incidents.

  • Assist in development of process control vision for the Containerboard and Cellulose mills.

  • Provide Process Control guidance in alignment with the group vision for 4 Containerboard and 6 Cellulose facilities.

  • Participate in the development or selection of standard control technologies for the Containerboard and Cellulose business.

  • Provide technical expertise in support of scope development of capital projects for all areas of an integrated Paper/Pulp facility.

  • Train operators, supervision, and process control engineering personnel.

  • Provide personal development guidance to Process Control Engineering personnel.

  • Analyze existing systems, and develop strategies for improving safety, reliability, efficiency, and quality based on process knowledge and experience.

  • Perform benchmarking, gap closure analysis, and preliminary technical and economic feasibility studies for the modification of or addition to existing pulping, bleaching and utility systems.

  • Provide guidance in selection of instrument specifications and control valves.

  • Perform optimization of existing and new systems to reduce process variability and improve profitability.

  • Provide advanced control software systems support to maintain optimized process operations.

  • Participate in creating stability of existing and new control systems using available software loop analysis and tuning tools.

  • Assist in design and analysis of Flame Safety Systems based on GP standards.

  • Lead or participate in check-out and start-up assistance for new or modified control systems and processes.

  • Provide forced outage and maintenance outage support.

  • Coordinate, review and approve work done by engineering consultants.



What You Will Need:




Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelors degree or higher in Engineering or Pulp and Paper Science OR 15 years of work experience in Automation or Process Control

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Automation or Process Control

  • Experience in leading automation projects and implementation of project activities

  • Knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of continuous manufacturing

  • Ability to travel at least 50%

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelors degree or higher in Chemical or Electrical Engineering

  • Five (5) or more years of leadership experience in Automation or Process Control

  • Extensive experience in pulp and paper industry control systems

Knowledge-Skills-Abilities:


  • Leadership skills, including the ability to interact effectively with mill process control groups and mill leadership

  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel including management, operating and maintenance personnel

  • Knowledge of Electrical engineering principles

  • Knowledge of Process Control engineering principles

  • Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controller use and design fundamentals

  • Knowledge of Distributed Control System use and design fundamentals

  • Knowledge of Flame Safety System design fundamentals

  • Knowledge of instrumentation and control valve specification fundamentals

  • Knowledge of Quality Control System fundamentals

  • Knowledge of integrated drive system design fundamentals

  • Knowledge of control loop design and optimization tools

  • Knowledge of Advanced Process Control software application and optimization

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, PowerPoint, & Word
