Position Purpose & Summary

The Senior Engineer is responsible for leading multifunctional project teams. This role is accountable for the development and execution of project scope, schedule, budget, resource needs and operating financials across the CSST sites in Cedar Rapids, IA. This position is responsible for developing and managing all personnel and tasks involved in project management from project development to start-up including construction and commissioning activities. This position leads the development of project scope, schedule, budget, operating financials (including commitment preparation), staffing plan and project execution plan including participation of multifunctional teams as applicable to each project. This position develops the procurement, bidding and contracting strategies for the project, reviews bid packages, leads the negotiations on equipment, engineering and labor packages. This person is responsible for determining the appropriate construction management processes considering safety, schedule, efficiency, cost management and documentation. This person is accountable for meeting all project objectives using the appropriate Project Management practices including Cargills Project Delivery Process (PDP), Build, Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI), Project Portfolio Management (PPM) and Project Management Guidelines (PMG) as applicable to each project size and scope.

Principal Accountabilities

25% Defines and is accountable for project objectives and facilitates interaction with project sponsor and stakeholders to ensure alignment of project objectives. Defines viable alternatives to meet project objectives. Develops capital budget, schedule, scope, operating costs, resource needs, and benefits for each option. Performs financial analysis on each viable option and selects best option. Writes commitment and charter for funding approval if appropriate. Fully utilize Project Management Guidelines, PDP, Build, and PPM processes as needed to properly execute project. Generate project reports as needed to track costs and schedule.

15% Mentoring of project engineers to perform, assist, and/or review capital initiatives for engineering activities at multiple locations within BU to address best practice gaps and execute projects. Establish key measure, best practices and CMO requirements and ensure they are adhered to & addressed during project execution & process operations

15% Process engineering including Piping & Instrumentation Design (P&ID) development, system throughput calculations, equipment selection, mass and material balance, energy and utility calculations.

15% Responsible for project team leadership, organization and alignment. Manages construction personnel and activities insuring adherence with safety requirements, schedule, scope, change management processes and budget.

10% Develops, reviews and awards bid packages for labor and equipment including contract negotiations in cooperation with Procurement and Cargill Law.

10% Supports the start-up, commissioning personnel and activities.

5% Assist operations with troubleshooting, problem solving and optimization.

5% Help facilitate and participate in regional project workshops for build project management.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors or higher degree in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or other engineering discipline that has a strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dry material handling,mass/material balance and process design.
  • 5 or more years in Industry experience
  • 3 or more years of project engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to execute large projects (nominally $5MM or more) or to manage a portfolio of projects ($2MM or more) successfully.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of project engineering and/or operations supervision.
  • Experience outside of project engineering is a plus such as operations, manufacturing technology, or maintenance.
  • Demonstrated project controls skills for budget management and schedule development and execution.
  • Knowledge of PDP Project Workshop Facilitation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Process Safety Methodologies including Process Hazard Analysis and/or Process Risk Assessment.

Success Factors

  • Working knowledge of project management practices,project staged-gate review process(PDP, PPM), project estimating & scheduling techniques
  • Working knowledge of food safety and EH&S requirements
  • Demonstrated high levels of organization, communication and documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach and delegate.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multifunctional teams and personnel.
  • Motivation and ability to execute projects/tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated competencies in several of the key process unit operations such as evaporation, heat exchange, ion exchange, drying, etc.
  • Basic competencies in energy pinch analysis, food safety, Automation, Electrical & Instrumentation (AE&I), Good
  • Manufacturing Practices (GMP), American Society Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B31.3 piping design, American Petroleum Institute (API) 650 tank construction, Management of Change (MOC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Ability in aligning, prioritizing, and executing strategy across multiple locations in the same technology
  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities in alignment with business goals
