Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Chemicals Scientist to join our Specialty Additives business unit at our Wilmington DE research center. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the specialty additives innovation function. This position will report to the North America Innovation Lead.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop leading-edge chemical solutions to industrial specialty additives including specialty coatings, inks, adhesives and binder applications, involving a wide range of chemistry types
  • Plan, execute, analyze, draw conclusions from experiments, communicate results with internal and customer bases, lead filing of IP as required; possibly direct technician support
  • Work with marketing and sales professionals to understand industry needs; lead or participate in multiple research projects with members of multi-disciplinary teams to achieve targets
  • Perform customer service studies, utilizing wide range of application methodology to determine performance or properties; with Sales team communicate results to customers
  • Engage with manufacturing to solve performance or quality issues
  • Maintain up to date understanding of critical science, and build relationships with industrial colleagues

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • PhD or equivalent education and demonstrate broad chemistry proficiency with emphasis on polymer science, structure/property relationships, material science and interfacial science
  • 5+ years R&D experience in industrial specialty chemicals
  • Experience in more than one industrial chemical application for testing and product development
  • Have proven record of problem solving and innovation
  • Have strength in design of experiments, executing experimentation and insightful data analysis.
  • Have experience and the ability working with global multidisciplinary project teams, and leading projects through to commercialization
  • Effective oral and written communications skills, with diverse global communities, both internal and external

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • Experience and familiarity with cellulosic and acetylenic chemistry and properties
  • Prefer experience in technology areas of specialty coatings, inks, adhesives, binders or membranes
  • Understanding of market fundamentals of industrial specialty additives
  • Some exposure or experience with chemical manufacturing (plant or pilot)
  • Ability to merge diverse chemical areas for problem solving and innovation
  • Hands on experience running industry standard tests
