Role: Through Air Dried (TAD) Technology Platform Process Engineer



The Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products Corporate Engineering team is looking for a TAD Technology Platform Process Engineer to join the team at our Port Hudson Mill in Zachary, LA. The ideal Engineer for this role will have a Chemical and/or Paper Science background to support the production of TAD towel products through our TAD Technology Platform Team. This team is primarily responsible for defining the operating parameters for the TAD paper making process and sharing that knowledge with the operations teams. This is accomplished via working closely with mill operations to improve operating metrics including production, quality and cost. Georgia-Pacific is also building a new paper machine and converting operation in the Palatka, FL mill, and the TAD Technology Platform team will support those efforts.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:


  • Working closely with mill operations teams to improve paper machine OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness),


  • Process troubleshooting/optimization, trials; presenting findings to appropriate teams.


  • Explaining/training technicians on process concepts and changes


  • Coordination with R&D, mills, RST Business Team, and Engineering to develop venture summaries for investments and product improvements.


  • Assisting with all operational aspects of design, construction, check-out, commissioning, and start-up activities with the new paper machine and converting assets.


  • Working closely with the Port Hudson TAD paper machine operations and maintenance teams to advance equipment reliability and process stability.


  • Applying problem-solving & trouble-shooting skills to paper machine operations.


  • Leveraging internal and external resources (technical, engineering, operations).


  • Systems covered include the following process areas: stock preparation, stock approach, water system & chemical systems, dust collection, paper manufacturing (forming, drying, dry end), and automated processes (distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers, material handling systems).


  • Applying MBM to drive long term value creation in support of Manufacturing and Business customers.


The job requires work in and around industrial equipment. Requires occasional 12 hour night or day shifts during trials or equipment start-ups to support project execution or down days. Seated using PC for portions of workday.

The home organization for this position is Consumer Products Group (CPG) Engineering based in Green Bay, WI. Physical location will primarily (>70% of time) be at the Port Hudson, LA mill. Employee will occasionally support operations in Wauna, OR, and will be expected to support the new machine start-up in Palatka, FL.



Occasional travel is required. The amount may vary at times but should not exceed 25%, on average for the next 2 years.




What You Will Need:


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree or higher in Mechanical, Chemical, or Paper Science Engineering.

  • Minimum 6 months papermaking operations leadership experience.

  • Ability to work non-standard hours (nights, weekends) when necessary and travel to work sites (up to 25% travel).

What Will Put You Ahead?


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience and training in analytical troubleshooting, advance problem solving techniques, and proficiency in statistical analysis tools (ex: Kepner Tregoe, etc.).

  • Paper industry experience preferred.

  • Paper machine start-up experience is a plus.

  • Ability to create and use process documents such as P&ID.

  • Experience with MS-Office, and PI.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a team environment.


  • Demonstrated ability to manage time with little supervision.


  • Results driven self-starter.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.


  • Ability to prioritize multiple issues simultaneously with a sense of urgency.


  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel from mill. operating and maintenance personnel to top corporate management.


  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.


  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and organize multiple priorities with a sense of urgency.


  • Demonstrated ability to work with an awareness of safety for yourself and others.
