Located in North Americas wind belt, Davenport is at the forefront of renewable energy technology and has remained home to our largest manufacturing facility since 1927. Originally producing cereal, the plant became a pet food-only manufacturer in the late 90s and now carefully produces, packages and ships several varieties of our Dog Chow, Puppy Chow, Alpo, Beneful, Purina ONE, Cat Chow, Kitten Chow, Friskies and Kit N Kaboodle brands.
As the Transportation Manager you will direct transportation activities for the plant and ensure low cost, on time delivery of products to meet Requested Delivery Date requirements. You will also receive, research and respond to customer needs, requests and complaints. The Transportation Manager will also evaluate, measure results and develop programs for continuous improvement.

Fostering a safe work environment, ensuring all quality standards are met, and being responsible for the proper management of day-to-day operational and environmental issues is a critical piece of this role.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Transportation Operations: Ensures low cost, reliable inbound and outbound transportation service

  • Develop new truckload carriers who can meet Nestle Purina PetCare (NPPC) cost and service objectives

  • Negotiate rates with carriers that are cost-advantageous to NPPC Co.

  • Monitor performance of truckload carriers with respect to cost/service (on time delivery)

  • Assist carriers in troubleshooting and resolving service-related problems

  • Assist pick-up customers in optimizing the performance of their designated carriers

  • Develop and use rail when that mode proves cost beneficial versus truckload shipments

  • Coordinate shipments from nearby co-packers to ensure carrier resources optimized

  • Maintain rate information for inbound shipments to insure utilization of least cost mode of transportation (Minimize Demurrage)

  • Initiate, process, and collect claims arising from loss, damage, or overcharge

  • Customer Service: Receives, researches and responds to customer needs and requests

  • Coordinates with St. Louis Marketing Program Managers, Order Revenue Management representatives and the Customer Development Group representatives on timely deployment of goods for promotions and trade shows

  • Oversees the handling of customer returns. Oversees ordering of items not manufactured locally from other plants; ensuring the product arrives on time and in sufficient quantity to cover forecasted demand. Contacts customers (phone and face-to-face visits) to ensure order shipment quality and transportation service meets customer expectations

  • Management/Administration: Develops and implements strategy, policies, procedures goals/objectives and measurement mechanisms to ensure successful attainment of Department, Plant and Company Blueprint for Success. Develops and implements programs for continuous improvement in operations within his/her jurisdiction.

  • Hire, train, organize, direct, and motivate the clerical staff assigned to transportation functions

  • Oversee Spotting Service at all levels and perform management of drop lots

  • Coordinate daily business with Warehouse to take advantage of Warehouse capabilities. Ensures staff personnel have the information and resources needed to successfully execute assigned responsibilities

  • Develops, presents, and executes the Transportation operating budgets; monitors costs daily. Prepares correspondence, attends meetings, communicates and coordinates with department personnel, plant management, St. Louis staff, personnel at other plants, carriers, vendors and suppliers to accomplish routine workload

  • Leads Nestle Continuous Excellence (NCE) initiatives through coaching, feedback and recognition. Communicates NCE initiatives and ensures active participation by Team Members. Participates in NCE initiatives through operational Reviews (SHO, DOR, Functional Reviews, etc.) and NCE Methodology

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum):

Education:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution

Experience (Years/Type):

  • 4+ years of experience in transportation, logistics, or distribution in a manufacturing or high volume distribution or warehouse environment
