NOTE:These are FULL-TIME (40 hrs/week) positions, even though they're system-defined as "part-time." Interested candidates must be able to work from mid-May until the end of summer break.


Under the general supervision of the Public Health Entomologist Administrator, assists in preparing vertebrate and arthropod samples for microbiological testing; assists with microbiological testing of samples using techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect fluorescent-antibody (IFA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR); assists in identifying arthropod specimens and preparing them for testing; captures arthropods and vertebrates using a variety of traps, and/or collects environmental samples for microbiological testing from sites statewide, and/or performs necropsy on dead animals and removes appropriate tissues for arbovirus testing; assists in data entry and summarization of laboratory and surveillance data for West Nile virus and other vector-borne diseases; assists in informing and advising persons in agency and from other federal, state, and local agencies and the public by responding to telephone, mail, and e-mail queries on vector borne diseases. Travels and transports specimens and samples to designated program areas as assigned (e.g., Ohio Department of Health (ODH) headquarters, ODH laboratory). Travels to designated investigation areas to accomplish arthropod and pathogen surveillance.

Completes data forms as required by ZDP Program Guidelines and as instructed by Supervisor for evaluation of pest, vector and reservoir animal populations.

Per the instructions and directions of Supervisor, prepares specimens for storage and transport to the testing laboratory: perishable insects, animal tissues and environmental samples containing insects will be placed in sealed and labeled vials, jars, or cartons and frozen on dry ice, or refrigerated, as appropriate; sample containers will be packed in cool chests or boxed to prevent breakage, escape, or damage to the insect and animal samples. May have to lift and move items up to forty (40) pounds.

Currently pursuing a degree in the field of biological or animal sciences, or related field.
