POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Full Time, 40 hours per week
Monday - Friday
First Shift, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
Location: 2800 Berlin Turnpike in Newington.
This position requires a considerable amount of traffic within the state. Applicants invited to interview will be required to supply a copy of their Driver's License.
THE ROLE
The Building Construction Specialist 1 works in the Department’s code enforcement program for the design review and construction inspection of all new buildings and renovations of existing buildings to ensure compliance with all applicable state building and fire codes and ADA requirements, including public transportation infrastructure and traffic signals for code compliance. Also responsible for inspection of all fuel storage installations for compliance with governing DEEP regulations and inspection/release for all electrical utility service installations located on Department property. Note: New Home Builder and Home Improvement Contractor will not be considered a trade licensing.
The incumbent will be required to provide service for an agency operating with a 24/7/365 commitment to the transportation needs of the public.

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience with construction projects involving all building trades (e.g., plumbing, heating, electrical) OR as a Municipal Building Official.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have included the review and inspection of large scale building projects for building code compliance.
NOTE: Large scale building projects are interpreted as buildings exceeding 12,000 square feet in size and more than one story in height not including apartment buildings and single family residences.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in architecture, civil, mechanical or electrical engineering or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, knowledge and application of current Connecticut State Building Codes and Fire Safety Codes, including conducting inspections of buildings and related facilities.
Experience managing multiple diverse projects of varying scale, with proven ability to apply code compliance requirements across commercial and industrial projects.
Experience conducting field inspections of building construction, renovations, and related activities to ensure compliance with applicable Connecticut codes and standards
Possession of a trade license, construction inspector license, or other relevant inspector certification.
Experience documenting compliance efforts and participating in permitting processes to ensure adherence to Connecticut laws, codes, regulations, ordinances, and ADA standards.
Experience reading, interpreting, and applying municipal and Connecticut State codes, rules, and regulations, along with preparing clear and accurate written reports.
Possession of a Connecticut Building Official (BO) or Assistant Building Official (ABO) Certification.
Experience performing plan reviews for building construction, renovations, and Connecticut State Building code compliance.
