What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking highly motivated Cybersecurity professional to join our team. Our team is multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary, in that we work on many technology areas to accomplish our mission. The successful candidate will support vulnerability studies as both an individual contributor and project leader. Job duties may include roles such as reverse engineering designs to examine for technical vulnerabilities, supporting peers in performing experiments (e.g., data capture, assembly, fixturing, test execution), the development of unique experiments, brainstorming and conceptualization of vulnerability studies, and communications with customers. It is crucial to have the ability to collaborate with other Subject Matter Experts (SME) of various scientific and engineering backgrounds and skillsets to be successful within our team.
On any given day you may be called on to:
- Brainstorm and develop hardware concepts to be tested and/or validated.
- Define and communicate complex, multi-disciplinary problems.
- Develop and execute tests of various types.
- Plan and collaborate on experiments and assessments.
- Perform other research and analysis of designs and new concepts.
- Lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams of engineers and subject matter experts
- Develop trust-based partnerships with organizations internal and external to Sandia
- Peer review other Vulnerability Capability Unit work
This position may require occasional travel.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent (e.g., DOD Top Secret). The position will require the ability to maintain an SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E, Cybersecurity candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Computer Forensics, Mathematics or a directly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Experience in one or more of the following: reverse engineering, software vulnerability assessment, web application assessment, computer networking, computer architecture, compilers, or similar computer security topics.
- Proficiency in scripting or high-level programming.
- Familiarity with secure-system design principles and information assurance principles.
- Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form in a concise manner.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Experience with the following:
- Working hands-on in laboratories.
- Executing work safely and securely.
- Plan, coordinate, and document laboratory and field tests.
- Ability to work within a small diverse SME based team (2 to 10 people).
- Desire to work with a highly diverse and driven project team delivering to multiple areas of our Nation's Security.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.
- Familiarity with NNSA, DoD/DoE, and IC organizations.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects.
- Demonstrated ability to define, construct, and stand up new operating work envelopes..
About Our Team
The Vulnerability Capability Unit (VCU) is part of the Threat Intelligence Community (TIC). Our customers include decision makers for a wide variety of missions whom we strive to support with vulnerability research and demonstrations that enable them to make security related decisions. Staff members come from all areas of the STEM world and beyond. We pride ourselves in our technical approach, intellectual diversity, and our ability to answer difficult questions with data. Our customers have come to trust us to provide this data in a relevant and timely manner as well as to use extreme discretion with their critical information. To acquire this data, we develop and perform a wide array of discovery tests. These range in type from materials to electrical to mechanical to explosives to software analysis and digital design. To support this variety of testing capabilities, we have multiple laboratories and long-standing partners.
Posting Duration
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
