What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an early career R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to support the growing lithium ion and lithium primary battery projects in Department 7445. This department provides engineering design and development support to the Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG) of power sources used for NNSA, DoD, DOE, NASA and commercial applications. Our products are based on several different battery chemistries including both lithium primary and secondary cells. Products are designed and validated to meet demanding customer requirements. The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively in a team environment as well as being able to work independently while helping to meet team goals and deliverables. Training and mentoring will be provided. Occasional mission essential travel may be necessary.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Produce, test and deliver power source products in a dynamic environment
- Set-up and conduct experiments
- Prepare, modify, and assemble test equipment
- Evaluate materials and support the fabrication of prototype batteries or test articles
- Help in the analysis and interpretation of test data
- Perform literature searches and support technical drawing reviews
- Develop specifications and work instructions
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
$63,800 - $123,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- High school diploma, or equivalent
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) discipline or equivalent work experience
- Previous experience working safely in a lab environment
- Three or more years of experience working with electromechanical components, particularly lithium primary and secondary batteries, including fabrication and testing using commercial or custom testers as well as open set-ups
- Three or more years of experience with relevant processes such as encapsulation, soldering, laser welding, resistance welding and/or tooling & fixturing design
- Experience with modeling software such as Ansys
- Experience building and testing electrical cables or testers
- Experience developing/writing work instructions
- Experience reading and interpreting drawings
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills especially with equipment troubleshooting Examples would include the ability to use multimeters to troubleshoot electrical circuits or resolve software issues
- Previous experience working in accordance with Sandia ES&H policies
- Evidence of strong written and communication skills
About Our Team
Department 7545, Power Sources Design and Development is part of the integrated Power Sources Technology Group. The Power Source organization provide cradle to grave R&D, engineering, and production of power sources including thermal batteries, thermoelectrics, and lithium primary and secondary cell batteries, as well as research into many other new power source technologies. Power source technology is a growing need area both within the NW SMU and in the Energy, Climate and Infrastructure Security (ECIS) SMU. While the primary customer of the Power Sources and Metrology Group is NNSA, both business areas are growing a customer base including DoD, NASA, other DOE offices, and commercial entities.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
