Position Summary
This is responsible, supervisory, and limited administrative work in planning, assigning, and supervising the activities of a major division of the police department.
Work involves the responsibility for planning, assigning, and supervising activities of the patrol or investigative operation. Work includes the responsibility for making decisions regarding actions to be taken, and exercising independent judgment in the application of laws and ordinances. Supervision is exercised through subordinate supervisors over all employees of the assigned operation. Work is performed independently within established laws, policies, and regulations and is reviewed through conferences and reports.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary law enforcement methods, practices, and techniques.
- Extensive understanding of applicable federal and state laws, as well as relevant university policies and regulations.
- Strong knowledge of principles, methods, and best practices in police administration.
- Thorough understanding of the roles, functions, and objectives of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
- Ability to assess and resolve complex law enforcement challenges through sound analysis and judgment.
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinate personnel, including providing guidance, instruction, and training.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats.
- Ability to exercise decisive command in high-pressure situations, demonstrating technical competence, integrity, and emotional stability recognized by subordinates.
- Ability to interact with the public with firmness, professionalism, and courtesy under stressful conditions, and to maintain effective working relationships with community members, media representatives, and partner agencies.
- Proficiency in the safe use, maintenance, and oversight of firearms, including strict adherence to firearms safety protocols.
- Competence in administering first aid and providing related training.
