Description
The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications for the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship 1 program. The DOT will provide one (1) year of paid on-the-job training and classroom learning to develop the needed skill sets for you to become a transportation professional!
THE ROLE
You will participate in a highly structured training program that includes both hands-on and classroom education. The purpose of this program is to provide employment opportunities to candidates who do not currently possess Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL).
Throughout the training program, the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 1 will be expected to:
- Learn to operate and maintain various types of highway construction and maintenance equipment.
- Assist in performing a variety of tasks related to highway maintenance including, but not limited to, snow and ice removal, pothole repair, and drainage maintenance.
- Strictly adhere to safety guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Collaborate with experienced transportation professionals to successfully implement all training measures.
- Develop the skills necessary to become a qualified CDL Driver and proficient in highway maintenance operations.
- Complete assigned tasks with a high level of precision and efficiency.
- Communicate utilizing 2-way radio.
- Lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks that require standing, climbing or bending.
NOTE:
- Selected Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice candidates shall be required to successfully take and pass a controlled substance/alcohol test as part of their physical pre-employment hiring process.
- Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and will be the basis for disqualification for employment or will be a basis for removal from employment.
- Failure to pass, fully participate or comply with the pre-employment drug and alcohol test shall result in the withdrawal of any conditional hiring offer made by the agency. Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentices shall be enrolled in the DOT Random Drug and Alcohol Testing Program, administered by the - Agency's third party administrator, upon hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentices must expect and be comfortable with the following working conditions:
Performing work outside regularly, including working outside for extended periods of time in extreme weather conditions and temperatures, including inclement weather.
- Working on highways, near fast moving traffic, including removing deceased animals from the highway.
- Periodic mandatory overtime during nights and weekends during the training period, as needed. It should be noted that periodic mandatory overtime is also required at the Transportation Maintainer 2 level.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Once accepted into the program, applicants will be required to register with the Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program and pay the $50.00 annual registration fee. Please see MOA and Appendix A for Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentices for further information regarding the program.
Length of Training: Registered Apprentices must successfully complete at least 26 weeks of training, which includes approximately 4 weeks of CDL training. Once completed, you will advance into a Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 2 classification for an additional 26 weeks.
In order to successfully advance to the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 2 classification, you must:
Earn an evaluation rating of Good or Better.
Acquire and retain a Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tank Endorsement.
Acquire and retain a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC).
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
*The Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice program is a one (1) year temporary position. Promotional opportunities to Transportation Maintainer 2 are contingent upon available vacancies at the conclusion of the apprenticeship program.
Office/On-Site.
Full Time, 40 hours per week.
Monday through Friday.
First Shift, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Anticipated start date of June 2026.
Selected candidates must reside within 30 miles of the nearest garage location.

Experience using hand tools and power tools.
Experience with landscaping or property maintenance tasks.
Experience with snow removal operations.
Experience with construction techniques or construction related coursework.
Experience following instructions and working within a team structure.
