If you are an Additive Materials Engineering professional looking for an opportunity to grow, Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you! Based in our Marshalltown, IA location, you will be responsible for initial development and ongoing maintenance of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) production processes. Provide technical consultation and guidance to Emerson businesses regarding L-PBF produced material. Develop roadmap for taking new materials to production. Identify industry standards of strategic importance to the Emerson additive program and ensure appropriate representation. Provide technical input into equipment selection and processing changes as the program matures and increases in scale.
  • Conduct R&D experiments to characterize L-PBF production processes evaluating productivity, material quality, and dimensional characteristics.
  • Provide technical leadership in the identification, development, application, and qualification of metallic materials for application to products in the Emerson portfolio.
  • Develop documentation and support for ASTM material standards and other industry code and standards requirements.
  • Represent Emerson as L-PBF material Subject Matter Expert in discussions with customer technical personnel.
  • Contribute to and interpret industry standards, weld procedure qualification, assessment of materials applications and standardization of materials.
  • Provide support in the following areas: failure analysis, supplier qualification, materials documentation/organization, developing and maintaining internal standards and practices.
  • Support production location to ensure material quality performance.

  • Undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering, with a metallurgical emphasis or BS in Metallurgy
  • Keen attention to safety
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Expertise in metallurgical principles associate with welding, casting, and mechanical properties
  • Expertise in materials characterization (metallography, hardness, tensile, etc.)
  • Ability to design comprehensive systems of experiments to rapidly identify suitable additive parameters
  • Knowledge of industry standards particularly those associated with the process industry (ASTM, ASME, etc.) (with preference for experience working within standards technical committees and balloting)
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new technology
  • Highly organized and able to accomplish goals in an environment of ambiguity and change
  • Self-motivated, self-sufficient, and capable of working with teams with competing interests
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Masters in Materials Engineering preferred
  • Additive Engnieering experience
