Responsible for the timely review of home health coding during the training period of the Coding Specialist. In partnership with the Coding Trainers, the Coding Reviewer supports and assists the Coding Specialist in developing a coding competency that will prepare them for home health coding certification.

1. Reviews coding completed by the Coding Specialist during the training period through attainment of the coding certification.


2. Provides instruction and education on inaccurate/incomplete coding recommendations from the Coding Specialist.


3. Collaborates with the Coding Trainers in identifying opportunities for coding instruction and remedial training.


4. Collaborates with the Coding Trainer for measuring competency levels of Home Health Coding Specialists.


5. Assists with Home Care Specialist workflow, as needed, to maintain timely processing of OASIS visits.


6. Adheres to established confidentiality standards and HIPAA concerning community and patient information.


7. Adheres to established confidentiality standards and HIPAA concerning community and patient information.


8. Participates in the Coding Specialist training programs, as needed. May assist the Coding Trainers in education and updates related to coding regulations and guidelines.


9. Provides support in reviewing coding as needed with other associates assigned to provide coding in agencies other than the coding specialist

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. College Degree preferred. Minimum three years coding experience in home health, experience with electronic medical record systems, current certification in Home Health Coding, proven proficiency and knowledge of training and education principles.

Certifications, Licenses, and Other Special Requirements
OASIS Certification preferred or obtained within 6 months of hire. Must maintain home health Coding certification. Frequent travel is required.

Management/Decision Making
Applies existing guidelines and procedures to make varied decisions within a department. Uses sound judgment and experience to solve moderately complex problems based on precedent, example, reasonableness or a combination of these. Ability to manage defined systems and processes within BHS and able to successfully convey this knowledge.

Knowledge and Skills
Possesses extensive knowledge of a distinct skill of function and a thorough understanding of the organization and work environment. Has a working knowledge of a functional discipline. Knowledge of HIPAA and Federal Regulations, OASIS Guidelines and Home Health Conditions of Participation and Coverage Determinations as they pertain to coding Home Health episodes. Basic computer software skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
