Position Summary

The Assistant Operations Director of the Animal Research Facility maintains and manages all animal resources facility (ARF) space assigned to the ARF, provides supports, instruction, and advice to researchers that requires the use of animals. Performs specialized, diverse work activities and coordinate solutions, working independently, solely supporting the operations, maintenance, repair, upkeep, inventory tracking, and refurbishing activities related to the Animal Research Facility (ARF). Will also provide basic instruction on how to use the instruments in the research facility. The Assistant Operations Director is also responsible for safety and compliance.

Starting annual salary for this position will be between $80,000 and $95,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science or related field
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • 5 years of experience in a laboratory animal resource facility
  • Registered Veterinary Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist

Essential Functions
  • Provides basic instruction, when necessary to: undergraduates, graduates, postdocs, faculty and external users wanting to learn how to use the instruments in the facility
  • Provides basic animal handling to individuals needing to learn techniques for their research
  • Participates in the Conduct of Research Class
  • Provides faculty the necessary information for the preparation of grant proposals seeking funding for the acquisition of equipment that will improve the facility's ability to do research and teach graduate and undergraduate students
  • Keeps abreast of technological advances in equipment for the facility, are broadly aware of faculty research interests and directs the faculty's attention to improved or new methodology that may facilitate their research
  • Ensures safety in the facility through training, protocols, guidelines, and maintaining space, resources, and equipment
  • Ensures compliance in all areas
  • Creates, maintains and updates ARF's SOPs
  • Maintain ARF's Protocols (training, and holding)

Additional Functions:
  • Manages all environmental systems within the ARF and the testing and verification of PIs maintained equipment
  • Directs the day-to-day operation of Animal Resource Facility
  • Oversees the facilities annual budget
  • Manages budget monitoring, expenditure review and approval, processing payments
  • Responsible for purchasing, reconciliation, and billing for the facility including animal ordering and supplies.
  • Manages the human resources functions (Timesheets, Leave Requests, PTO, etc.)
  • Direct animal care facility staff (performance evaluation in collaboration with the Attending Vet, coaching)
  • Equipment Inventory, facility access, facilities maintenance
  • Manages all associated space within ARF including:
    • RO water maintenance
    • IVC rack maintenance
    • Anesthesia certification
    • DEA registration
    • Fire Marshall for vivarium space and 2 nd floor areas
  • Responsible for automobile (Van) Inspection and Registration
  • Responsible for transport of animals and equipment to campus and Texas Medical Center
  • Responsible for providing data pertaining to the ARF and associated laboratory for the AAALAC accreditation and USDA

  • Excellent critical thinking, research and technical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of researchers, faculty, staff and students including both non-technical and technical individuals
  • Ability to work autonomously, as well as with other staff and faculty
  • Project management and time management skills
  • Promotes best practices of a research lab
  • Strong Customer Service skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Familiarity with all governmental regulations that relate to the use of animals in research
