The Robotics Data Automation and Machine Learning Associate Director designs and develops platforms and frameworks that facilitate automated data-driven decision-making for use in cell therapy application. This position will lead the design of tools to implement and train machine learning models using data from across the Takeda Cell Therapy Enterprise, and will deploy machine learning services across both discovery, development and manufacturing. The ideal candidate will leverage prior expertise to work cross-functionally across the organization and rapidly deploy the machine learning/AI capabilities that will inform and drive Takedas future Cell Therapy strategy.


  • Lead the design & development of systems, data structures, database and machine learning algorithms to be interfaced with automated/robotic solutions
  • Define data/instrumentation interface requirements towards implementation of Data Driven Decision Manufacturing (D3M)
  • Develop and implement appropriate machine learning/AI algorithms that can be interfaced with automated processing tools
  • Test, Qualify and Validate data systems towards deployment in both development and manufacturing
  • Manage both internal and external data partners/stakeholders
  • Work cross-functionally across discovery, development and manufacturing to deploy digital solutions across the Cell Therapy enterprise
  • Actively involved in design and implementation of custom automation hardware, including assisting in FAT/SAT and device qualification


Education Requirements:

  • Masters degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field; 7-10+ years of relevant work experience
  • PhD degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field; 4-8+ years of relevant work experience

Technical Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expertise in hardware and software design principles, particularly around robotics systems, data management, data architecture and data manipulation
  • Demonstrated expertise in the development and implementation of machine learning algorithms
  • Understanding of and prior experience in integration requirements between data network and robotics/automated processing tools
  • Knowledge of process optimization theory and applications, including machine learning, AI, and Data Driven Decision Making
  • Prior expertise in development and deployment of robotic processing architecture, particularly in manufacturing environments, is a plus
  • Excellent background in statistical analysis

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Technical Skills SME for GMP tools, including process and analytics and GMP manufacturing.
  • Teamwork Skills Demonstrated ability to work well on global cross-functional teams.
  • Communication Skills Able to expresses ones self clearly and concisely within team; documents issues and/or concerns concisely with colleagues; adjusts communication style as appropriate for the audience; timely and effectively communicates with senior management; technical writing skills to support authorship and approval of internal technical documents
  • Portfolio Management / Stakeholder Management Demonstrated experience in leading and managing internal and external partner and vendor relations
  • Organization Exercises good time management and prioritization skills to balance multiple project and departmental objectives
  • Technical - Subject matter expertise in a specific scientific area or areas. Demonstrated ability to successfully contribute across multiple scientific endeavors. Prior experience in URS, RFP and custom engineered solutions.
  • Knowledge Sharing - Ability to capture knowledge within the organization; improves solutions, processes, and deliverables through use of information; improves information capital by contributing experience, theories, deliverables, and models for others to use
  • Resource Management -Project management skills; ability to manage ones time within individual, departmental, and corporate goals and timelines; management of internal external resources (vendors)
  • External Involvement Demonstrated involvement in professional community evidenced by presentation of scientific posters or lectures at professional conferences or events. Interacts with external vendors for projects
  • Leadership Skills Develops and uses knowledge and interpersonal skills to appropriately influence and guide others towards the accomplishment of department/function goals and objectives.
