The Role

We are looking for a web-savvy, detail-oriented Associate Editor to join ITHAKA, a highly successful non-profit with a mission to expand access to knowledge and education around the world. Our servicesArtstor, JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R enable people everywhere to learn, to grow, and to overcome historical barriers to education. You will be part of our Marketing team working on JSTOR Daily (daily.jstor.org) our award-winning online magazine that reaches over 6 million readers a year. JSTOR Daily provides scholarly context for news and current events using the research, images, and primary sources housed on JSTOR, our platform that makes academic journals, books, documents, images, and other materials available to millions of learners across the globe. This is a great opportunity for a mid-senior level, data-oriented editor who is excited to leverage multimedia storytelling to translate scholarship for a general reader.

Remote applicants considered. ITHAKA's marketing teams are primarily based in NYC and Ann Arbor, MI. This role reports to the Editor of JSTOR Daily.


  • Acquiring and editing blog posts, columns, and other content in a broad range of subject areas to reach a diverse audience that includes researchers, teachers, and autodidacts. Generating ideas about how to leverage different content types to reach different audiences.

  • Hiring and managing a stellar, diverse team of regular freelance writers who are tasked with researching and writing short articles that provide scholarly and historical context to news and current affairs.

  • Identifying a network of writers who can serve as columnists or create content that serves as a resource for teachers.

  • Working with our web producer to traffic content through manuscript, fact-checking, copyediting, and then package content for publication on our website, social media, email, and other channels.

  • Cultivating and managing editorial and cross-promotional partnerships with peer publications and institutions.

  • Leading the strategic editorial planning around events and anniversaries in our cultural calendar.

  • Working with the social media team and producer to create a vibrant presence for the magazine on social media sites and to nurture our community of 90K+ readers who are part of this distributed audience.

  • Occasional writing for the site.

  • Editing email newsletters.

  • Other administrative and editorial tasks as needed.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 5-7 years of editorial and web production experience for an online publication. Experience in a startup environment, at a daily, small and/or new publication is a plus.

  • Must be comfortable with a daily editorial schedule.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, research, developmental editing, and line-editing skills. Ability to work effectively with writers and scholars.

  • Experience assigning stories, managing a team of freelance writers, and building a diverse network of contributors.

  • Experience using social media to drive readership; an aptitude for creative packaging of editorial content, including writing SEO-friendly headlines and social media copy.

  • An interest in academic research and scholarly publishing and a genuine passion for creating smart content that supports scholarship and education.

  • Familiarity with blogging software (WordPress), social media management tools (SproutSocial), project management tools (Basecamp, JIRA) and Google Analytics.

  • Solid planning and project management skills; ability to meet daily deadlines; goal-oriented and detail-oriented.

  • Self-starter, happy working independently and with a distributed team.

  • Bachelors degree at minimum; masters degree a plus.

The pay range for this position is ($68,000 $75,000). Base pay may vary with job-related knowledge, skills, experience, market location, and geography. Our total compensation package includes a no-cost health insurance premium option, an employer-funded retirement plan, and a generous paid time off program for all benefits-eligible staff.
