The University of Pittsburgh Center for Bioethics & Health Law seeks to hire a full-time faculty member at the associate level with tenure, with a primary appointment in the Department of Human Genetics in the Graduate School of Public Health. This faculty member will teach and supervise student research in the Master of Arts Program in Bioethics; teach case conferences in the Center's clinical ethics training program and/or facilitate ethics discussions in schools of the health sciences; conduct research/scholarship in bioethics, healthcare ethics, public health ethics, and/or research ethics; collaborate and/or provide ethics consultation on empirical research projects; and generally participate in the life, initiatives, and programs of the Center.

Candidates must possess all or most of the following:

  • PhD in bioethics, healthcare ethics, philosophy, or other relevant discipline
  • Peer-reviewed articles reflecting research/scholarship in bioethics
  • Potential to develop skills to collaborate on empirical research-either empirical bioethics research, or ethical aspects of other research, or both
  • Some experience teaching bioethics, healthcare ethics, research ethics, ethical theory (as relevant to healthcare), and/or philosophy of medicine (or philosophy of science relevant to healthcare) at the undergraduate level (with potential to teach at the graduate level)
  • Potential to teach clinical ethics to students of the health professions or practicing professionals, and to provide interprofessional ethics education
  • Potential to develop skills to mentor student research projects in bioethics, healthcare ethics, or research ethics
  • Interest in participating in-and developing the skills to help administer-Center initiatives, such as research ethics consultation, health humanities research and educational programming, or interdisciplinary research and education at intersections among ethics, religion and spirituality, health humanities, health policy, social determinants of health, public health, and healthcare
  • A commitment to the school's values of respectful dialogue, cultural humility, and promotion of health equity
  • A commitment to interdisciplinary research, interprofessional education, and the collaborative atmosphere and mission of the Center

For appointment at the level of Associate Professor with tenure, candidates must possess all or most of the following:

  • A substantial record of peer-reviewed articles reflecting research/scholarship in bioethics, and in addition, monographs and/or (co)edited volumes (or contracts for such volumes) are welcomed
  • Skill to collaborate on empirical research-either on empirical bioethics research, or as the ethics lead on other research projects-and previous experience is welcomed
  • Experience teaching bioethics, healthcare ethics, research ethics, ethical theory (as relevant to healthcare), and/or philosophy of medicine (or philosophy of science relevant to healthcare) at the graduate level and/or to clinicians-in-training and practicing clinicians
  • Skill to provide interprofessional ethics education and/or to teach ethics in multiple healthcare professions/disciplines, and previous experience is welcomed
  • Experience mentoring student research and the potential to mentor graduate student projects in bioethics, healthcare ethics, research ethics, or the ethical aspects of research in the health professions
  • Some experience in administering and organizing programs and conferences, and/or in curriculum development, and interest in eventually assuming administrative responsibility for some Center activities, programs, and initiatives
  • Experience in clinical ethics or research ethics consultation or on ethics committees, and/or experience working at some of the intersections among ethics, religion and spirituality, health humanities, health policy, social determinants of health, public health, and healthcare.
  • Salary and rank will be commensurate with the candidate's background/experience and the corresponding salary range is as follows:

    Associate Professor - $85k -$100k
